I have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Open World Championships for sport climbing in Austria in September 2018.
I have been sport climbing since 2008 when I discovered the Dynomites Climbing Club in Petone. I competed in my first national climbing competition when I was 10 and over the past 10 years I have managed to work my way up the ladder of the NZ competition scene, eventually competing at two IFSC Youth World Championships; Noumea, New Caledonia 2014 and Arco, Italy in 2015.
Last Year I moved to Mount Maunganui to train with the NZ coach Rob Moore in preparation for two IFSC bouldering and speed climbing open world cups. After training at the Mount since December 2017, I competed in China and had one of the greatest climbing experiences of my 10 years in the sport. This was due to many aspects, two of these being I got to experience climbing on a world scale and set the NZ record for Speed Climbing (10.48 seconds).
I love climbing because it aligns with several of my personality traits. It is a sport which relies heavily on perseverance, as there is almost constant failure and obstacles to overcome. I am always looking for new ways to explore my limits, and I find self improvement and progress through climbing. Reaching a high point in my climbing journey is one of the best feelings in the world, whether it be winning a competition or finally completing an outdoor climb after working on it for months.
I need financial assistance to get me to Austria to compete. Even the smallest contribution could make a difference. I will do my best to represent New Zealand in sport climbing.
I need to cover flights, accommodation, food, transport and training. I already have the equivalent of $2292 from the International Federation of Sport Climbing but I need an additional $2000 to cover the balance.
