Help George Walk Again!

  • George Can Walk Again! Tough Second Stage...

      9 May 2021

George can walk again - I shot this video yesterday. Although he walks much more naturally - he does have a slight limp in his right front leg - maybe compensation. I'll ask the vet about it next month.

Although this is good news - he is not allowed to (officially) run for another SIX MONTHS! This is to allow his muscle in that leg to get strong. He IS encouraged to go for long walks - so if anyone knows of long day hikes not far from Auckland city (paybe offleas so Gemma ca run in front? ) do let me know!

Anyway, we've done it! He can walk again..I'll be happier when he can run and play as before but this progress has been solid and its satisfying. I'll be watchful of that limp.

  • George T - Climb That Mountain!

Meet the new and improved George! Thanks to you he has regained the ability to walk again! His weight is a healthy 34.5 kg and he is alert and happy. The vet is pleased with him! Yesterday he went for an injection and although he is still not allowed to run for another four weeks - he did a lap of Panmure basin with his mum and I and this was with only barely discernible limping - He has his bouncy gait back at times although it is a little different from before . I have made a video journal from the time a few weeks ago that he was allowed to walk up Mt Wellington with us up until now. I’ll compile it and send it in an update. One more bridge to cross - to see how his other leg goes when he is running on a regular basis but happy he is where he is right now 🙂👌👌👌👌. Wonderful results!

  • Stepping Back A Little

An early start to queue up at the vet this morning - a little hot and bothered humans out there. George was chill, trying on different sunglasses and watching his doggy friends go in and out. - he likes visiting here. A jab for his arthritis, a compliment from the vet how his weight is coming down nicely , and advice to bring his walking time e down to a TOTAL of 15 minutes a day. He’s in it for the long haul. And back on pain killers for another week. All in all , he’s making good progress.

  • George is Getting On With It!

      25 February 2021

He is allowed to walk ten minutes in the morning and night - and I can see his progress in leaps and bounds...well you know what I mean.

Because this is a formative period, and I have talked to others whose dog was overzealous in making up for lost time..I'm being very careful with the walking time.

Ive also decided to invite other dog owners onto the facebook page to tell about their pooches' progress - in particular Id love to have input for one dog I housesat with last year.. her progress is still a little shaky a a few months on from her op and Im keen to have some discussion . about solutions.

I'll let you know of any changes. Until then, stay tuned and thanks from the bottom of George's heart (and paws!). Have a look at a small video I made of his rapid progress...

  • GOOD NEWS!

      16 February 2021

After a difficult night when it seemed his leg wasn’t improving and he didn’t want to stand on it- plus his mother, the fast Huntaway, was feeling down about her fav playmate’s disability- we had some good news!

The next morning - level 3- So masks all around and little wait time- George had his stitches removed - and the surgeon checked his leg. The pain is still just bruising - and - he is allowed to walk 5-10 mins each morning and night! He can now accompany his mum to Pt England and cheer her on as she does sprints! To celebrate, we went for his first official walk at Highbrook Reserve, in the rain. Being able to walk - and hop- a little - is a big step forward for him. Fantastic!

  • Brain Games

George is getting used to his cage, seeing it as his den now. He does get bored - evidence is the mattress he tore up.

As the weather is a little cooler he can sleep in the car with his mum, away from the yard. However still need to think about things he can do in the periods I am unable to visit, or when I have his mum to go for a run.

Nothing like a sit down (compulsory) with his mum by The Tamaki River , taking in the breeze and getting some complimentary EFT Tapping on his head - easy affirmation: “Good Boy George”

  • Day 5 of Recovery

      10 February 2021
    Main image

This is Day 5 of George’s ‘Quarantine’’. He is handling the pain really well, and because of the medication he is not eating as much as he could (which is good in a way, as the surgeon said to keep him lean)

There are two aspects that are apparent though - he has a really good set up - a cage with sundeck no less, and his kennel for cover. It looks more like a lions den and I wonder if I should start wearing Khaki.

The first thing however is he hates being left alone and missing out when I come to the yard to pick up his mother for a walk. Yesterday he was quite distraught, and didn’t understand why he couldn’t come. Heartbreaking. I’ve found giving him a bone distracts him while we slip out. I also give him low calorie treats when we return.

The other factor is boredom. When I was laid up for six weeks after a cycling accident I watched every episode of Vikings and Black Sea(?)on Netflicks. Short of hanging pictures of bones and pussy cats on his cage walls - do let me know if you have any suggestions to keep him occupied in his enforced isolation. This morning I’m hanging a chew ball

One of our wonderful donors suggested mental stimulation- I’ll be googling it as well, but I’m all ears...

(ahp4u@icloud.com or drop any tips in the Facebook page)

And because of his meltdown yesterday I took him on his first trip down to Tamaki River ;The nurse agreed -its good for his circulation.). He is easier to carry now and we just sat and basked in the breeze while I practised EFT tapping on his head. We’ll be doing daily trips to sit and see something different.

Apart from this he is healing well, and time is marching on - Vet follow up in Five days! , Let me know if you’d like to say hi to him in person He’s a sucker for attention!

    Speak to you soon

  • George Knew Something was Up

      5 February 2021

Both I and the Vets forgot Monday was a public holiday - so George is waiting in the surgery NOW for his op. We’ve left him there and I took Gemma for a scamper around the Business Park there. Mother’s Day off!

One good thing about all this is he is a much healthier 22kg compared to his previous 38kg! You might not recognise him!

When I took him there I know he understood what was happening - eyes moving side to side as if to say “... uh oh- it’s really happening”

At the clinic this morning I was speaking to the mum of another TCL Repair success story. Its looking good.

I’ll be hearing from the vet whether to pick George up later today or if he get to sleep over .

I’ll do another update before long. 👍

  • Geroge's Op date is coming sooner!

George has his operation on the 1st of February. He is on track for this, the funds received (thankyou) and I am busy looking onto a suitable crate for him to recover in for six weeks.

I had a talk to the surgeon yesterday who will be performing the operation ( I heard a rumour that they use fishing line! But luckily that is an outdated procedure He gave me a good link to read about the operation here https://www.murraystreetvetclinic.com/tplo) and his chances of running again without issues are good - he confirmed that the other leg will need to be done in the near-medium future.

George has been a real trooper - not showing pain except when his mother wants to play with him too vigorously and when he sits in the car at the wrong angle. (only one really loud yelp so far)

I'm thinking of inviting others who have had their pets/fur friends operated on into the Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/683894869154408) we have for George but you can get the same updates here.

It will be lovely for you to see George after he is fully recovered to see the changes you have helped to make possible. Looking forward to that day.

    Stay tuned!

      2 January 2021

This is so MAGICAL! Over the Christmas period wonderful people like you have helped out and in only a matter of days, the target amount has been MET! We were at the beach yesterday chatting to a couple of beautiful souls, got back, and experienced a really heavy hailstorm. Not long after it had cleared and I went to check on George and his mother, I got a notification the final donor had handled the balance to meet our target Totally magical and Awesome!

Because this fundraiser will be closing, I have created a Facebook page cahttps://www.facebook.com/groups/683894869154408/ called 'Help George to Walk Again' to give you updates about his journey to recovery.

The next step is to book his surgery and to prepare for his aftercare. Feel free to add yourself to this Facebook group ! Many many thanks again to all those who jumped on board. Stay tuned!
