Helping Gem go to school, a 10 years old little girl from Thailand, born with a muscular & neurological dysfunction, never been to school.

Auckland

Hi,

My name is Gem. I am 10 years old and I am from Thailand.

I was born with a muscular and neurological dysfunction which has not stopped me from being a lively and funny little girl, my physical disability affects my mobility and my vision.

My mum works full time in a restaurant in the south of Phuket island, a village cold Rawai, she works 6 days a week, from 8 am to 9 pm, I have to be with her at work because nobody else can take care of me. The owner of the restaurant Yiky also run a bed and breakfast on top of the restaurant, we live in one of the bedrooms of the restaurant

My friends Meriem and Zora, two sisters who visits the restaurant and stay at the bed and breakfast facility every time they visit Phuket, took me to see an ophthalmologist 2 years ago to help my vision and I got very trendy pink glasses 😊.

I have never been to school because my mother can not afford to enrol me in a suitable school which is equipped to attend to my needs. Even though my intellectual capacity is not the same as other girls my age, I really want to go to school and learn to read and write. I love drawing and I want to meet other children my age.

We have found a boarding public school where I can get the education I need. The school is free but my mother has to pay for doctor visits, school uniform, books and transportation home on the weekends. we estimated this to be 2500 bath / NZD 125 per month

These extra costs are very difficult for my mother who has me and my 2 siblings to support.

I would be grateful for any help

Thank you very much
