Raising money for hearing aides for a refugee family, to learn English and settle in to New Zealand.
Otago
Over 2.5 years, I have come to know a former refugee family quite well. They arrived to NZ 3 years ago from a war-torn country. They are the kindest, most gentle family who have remained positive (and grateful) in the most trying circumstances.
The man of the family has some significant health issues. He has received some good care in NZ, but with long specialist waitlists, cancelled surgeries, Covid-related delays and more - it has taken 2+ years to get fitted for special hearing aids. Most of the cost will be covered, except $500.00 they need to pay themselves. Their plan is to get a small loan, but I want to help them avoid that. They have lived on next to nothing in a new country while committing to English language classes and consistent volunteer jobs. I don't want them to skimp on food or other necessities to pay back the loan. I hope to raise $500.00 for them so they can get the hearing aids they desperately need and have been working towards for years, without causing extra financial stress.
His limited hearing has flow on effects that have impacted their settling in NZ. He struggles to hear in English class - this has prevented language acquisition and embarrasses him. Also, he started driving lessons, but could not hear well enough and the lessons were discontinued. With hearing aids, his hope is to progress with English and driving. He wants nothing more than to get a job.
The family has asked for anonymity, but I am 100% available to answer questions privately.
I am friends with this family for over 2 years.
