The Hiwinui Community is wanting to move their War Memorial to a more prominent position to reflect its importance in our community.
Manawatu / Whanganui
Our Hiwinui War Memorial used to stand proudly at the entrance to Hiwinui School. Over time, the school entrance has changed, and we now feel that the War Memorial's location is not fitting of its importance. Our War Memorial was 'Erected in Honour of the Boys who attended Hiwinui School and who Served in the Great War 1914-1919'. Additional names were added to it after WWII.
The Hiwinui Community Committee is proposing to move the War Memorial to a more prominent position, to create seated areas and a storyboard that reflects the history of the Hiwinui War Memorial and its Servicemen.
This will allow the memorial to be accessible by the public from the roadside, the memorial is currently behind a school fence and difficult to access. The image shows the general location that the Hiwinui War Memorial will be moved to, adjacent to Watershed Road.
Estimated costs for this move are $6,000. We are seeking donations up to this amount, with the Committee also looking into alternative funding sources.
The Hiwinui Community Committee is one of 16 Community Committees established and supported by the Manawatu District Council. We are here to support our Hiwinui residents.
Construction of a new base, movement of the obelisk to its new location, fencing, seating, storyboards.
Funds to be paid to Tracey Mouat, the Secretary of the Hiwinui Community Committee
