Help a skilled craftsman become a world-class luthier making string instruments studying at the top violin-making school in the world.
Wellington
We are supporting Nelson/Wellington resident 'Jay' Jihoon Lee as he fulfils his dream of studying the craft and secrets of instrument-making at the top school in the world, by financially supporting his study and living costs in Europe 2019-2022.
Jay is a multi-talented and skilled craftsman, having worked as a potter and builder, and he trained with my brother Ian Lyons at Ian's Violin Shop. Ian died suddenly and unexpectedly in 2015. Jay is continuing his legacy.
After his second attempt, and several years of intensive language learning, Jay was one of eight students from around the world - the only one outside Europe - to be accepted into the prestigious Mittenwald Violin Making school for a rigorous three-year course, starting in mid 2019.
Already Jay is excelling in his studies, which have been disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he among the top in his class for some subjects, impressing his teachers.
Contributing is an investment in New Zealand's talent, and it will benefit the music community, particuarly those who love classical and chamber music. There is a shortage of skilled luthiers in New Zealand.
Our family will match dollar-for-dollar (up to NZ$50,000) your donation or contribution.
Our family, the parents and brother and sister of Ian Lyons, are supporting Jay in his studies and living expenses in Germany, and will match dollar-for-dollar any contribution.
All funds will be given to Jay to help with the living and studying costs of being in Germany for three years.
Target goal 21 October 2019
Aiming to raise $25,000 to support Jay in Germany with his luthier training
