Help Josie on the road to recovery

  • Christmas Is Near

      6 December 2023

Josie is back home now , in time for Christmas . Now we will be able to have a great Christmas , things are looking up for her for now , with less pain relief since she's been home. Familiar surroundings and faces is what she has been missing not staff that fill her up with heavy pain relief so she doesn't recognise her own family , since being home that is not an issue now , truely blessed to have Josie out of hospital and at home ,

Here we are still in Rotorua hospital undertaking some of the strongest pain relief meds you could think of to help with pain and spasms , the bills are still coming in and thanks to all the donations we are keeping our heads above water financially. Priorities have change a little now as to get Jo home we need a couple of things to go in our favour . 1st is funding to purchase an air mattress identical to the mattress overlay josi is useing in hospital now which has deemed perfect for her requirements which the OT says there is no other of its kind in the hospital ,2nd is obtaining funding to increase carers hours to approx care for Josie 24 hours a day until pressure injury has healed , a long road but we are hopeful , todays we still haven't managed to get funding for a wheelchair vehicle due to lotteries commission have zero funds so that application has been declined . Josie is trying to stay positive but not an easy task when there's a language barrier and lack of knowledge from some staff , ideally be good to be home for Christmas to enjoy with friends and whanau plus also stated in previous updates bills are still coming in which we thank all donators very much for donating . It is very much appreciated , thank you all , god bless you all , will update around mid to late December on any progress , God Bless again ,Stay safe . ❤️❤️

  • Help Josie On The Road To Recovery Update

      4 September 2023

Hi, Josie is now back in Rotorua hospital . Was admitted first week of august 2023 with swallowing problems and not able to take meds in the tablet or capsule form ,. Medical staff have not found a solution 5 weeks down the track . The medical team are trying everything they can think of to get to the bottom of this and as a doctor in the unit confessed that this type of spinal injury is something she and the Rotorua team have not encountered before , it is hard to determine what course of action to take and this is disheartening and frustrating for Josie and close family members , after all we just want her home but she is a battler , with the positive support Josie gets from family and friends we are all hopeful to get her home soon to get back on the road to recovery . Thank you all for donating , positive vibes and encouraging words , we appreciate it very much . God bless you all,

  • Update 1 - 4th May

      4 May 2023

    Kia Ora Whanau,

Just giving a bit of an update with our mum!

So we are pleased to say, yes, she is finally home with dad!

She has enjoyed not listening to alarms, beeping noises etc like you would in a hospital ward.

Mum has been out of Rotorua Hospital since March.

She was transferred from Auckland Spinal Unit to Rotorua Hospital so she can be closer to home.

Every hospital is different in what resources they provide or lack of in this instance for mum with Rotorua.

Unfortunately the resources, facilities and patient care has been completely different for mum in Rotorua. Mainly for the fact is that there are very little resources and teams of people to help spinal injury patients.

However mum was adamant she wanted to be home and close to dad so she fought to have her come home.

Shes still paralysed from the waist down, however from the waist up - her back anyway. Has excruciating pain for mum.

She is having to go back into hospital every couple weeks as the pain killers they have been giving, have unfortunately not worked the way they should.

Mum is unable to have big doses of morphine as well, as its not good for her heart.

At the moment, she has been given a different set of pain killers which a higher dosage, that definately works when taken to the point, mum is sleeping within the hour of taking the pain relief.

Other then that, she has a wonderful carer who has been taking care of her whilst dad is at work between 8-4pm.

However in more recent news, my dad has just had a stroke, so he had a stint in hospital, and is now on light duties.

It hasnt been an easy road for our family, and with dad being the main bread winner, unfortunately hes had to cut back his hours to also slow down and look after himself as well.

Our family are very appreciative of the support and love this fundraiser has provided us.

We still have a bit of fight to go for our parents.

We would love still for this fundraiser to help provide a vehicle for my mum to be able to travel in. At the moment my mum is having to taxi everywhere.

The Ministry of Health are still assessing the application for funding, and there are still a couple grants we can apply for to help with a vehicle however this is no quick fix. Literally up to a year wait.

Unfortunately thats a bit too long for my mum not to be able to go outside etc or head to the shops.

The Van is in excess of $15,000. So we are hoping to have done some fundraising towards that with this fundraiser.

Other then that, mum is in good spirits. Being at home bed ridden or wheel chair bound is not an ideal life, and the stress of worrying about mum on dad and vice versa on mum is hard as it is.

But we are a fighting family and with prayers on our side, we will surely get through this!

We will give you an update soon, sorry its taken long!

Thanks again for all the love and support.

    We appreciate everyone!

    Jarnelle, Warena & Henare xo
