Kate Prior has Stage 4 brain cancer. She and her husband Byron need your support.
Auckland
In November 2025, after just a few weeks of constant migraines, Kate Prior was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. She has since undergone major surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. This journey has been incredibly challenging, leading her to step away from her full-time job to focus on ongoing treatment and spending quality time with loved ones.
Kate has built a career in Aotearoa spanning acting, writing, producing, and directing. This diagnosis has brought both emotional and financial strain. Her husband Byron (my brother) has been balancing sporadic work while taking on the role of full-time caregiver. These two creatives have spent their lives sharing their gifts with others. This Givealittle page is a way to give back to them as they lean into their craft to face life's biggest test.
"Through the words we write, the characters we play, the images we make, creativity is our way of making sense of the world. It’s how we find understanding, creative soul, and true beauty, even in the darkest moments. With your support, we can keep that light alive."
Koha, big or small, will help ease the pressures of bills and living costs, allowing Kate and Byron to focus on what really matters; making memories. It will also help open the door to exploring any potential clinical trials available to them.
The road ahead will not be easy, but even the smallest contribution will help share the load and remind them that they are not alone. Kia kaha Kate & Byron, we love you.
I am Kate's brother-in-law.
