Help Kate get another new jaw and her life back.

$17,055 of $17,000 goal
Given by 309 generous donors in 4 weeks

Help Kate get a life without a broken jaw, feeding tubes, pain and hospitals.

Whangarei, Northland

After over 7 years of jaw issues caused by a rare connective tissue disorder Kate needs a second jaw joint replacement costing over 96k NZD which is not covered by the public health system and is only partially covered by health insurance.

What began as a sore jaw turned into daily dislocations, severe pain, weekly emergency department visits, tests and specialists. A genetic connective tissue disorder known as Ehlers Danlos Syndrome has meant that her jaw has deteriorated severely, impacting her physical and mental health. It has left her unable to chew and fed through a nasal feeding tube, unable to work, and in pain with the slightest movement- despite over 10 surgeries including a total joint replacement on the right side (which was possible by incredible donors) Kates left jaw joint is considered end stage and there is no option but for Kate to have her left TMJ replaced- a surgery which is not covered by the public health system and does not come cheap. Kate has been very fortunate that her health insurance is willing to cover up to 60k of expenses for the surgery. That leaves Kate with a bill of $36k in order to return to a life without constant pain, feeding tubes and a broken jaw.

After the surgery, Kate hopes to return to teaching dance, mental health advocacy work, returning to study in the medical field and living a life without a broken jaw. Kate hopes to continue advocating for change within the NZ health system around TMJ disorders and treatment options.

I met Kate through my own advocacy work. We began talking online and eventually met in person. We clicked straight away and have now become close friends and have begun our own joint advocacy journey.

Use of funds

The funds raised will be put towards the costs of surgery which are not covered by insurance including the prosthetic joint, hospital fees, surgeon fees, anaesthetists fees, travel. If goal amount isn’t met, funds will still go towards the surgery fees

We Made It!!!  18 August 2023

Wow, what a week it has been! Its hard to believe that its happened really- it has all flown by so fast! We are now one week post op from the life changing jaw surgery that you all helped me get- so heres the update so far!

Surgery went well- took just over 7.5 hours- they also had to remove a tooth- which ended up having two roots which is apparently incredibly rare!! SO I have a very cool souvenir!

After two nights in hospital, we headed back to the air BNB in Auckland for a few days and headed back up north only a few days ago. And its nice to be back home! Physio has started and we are beginnig to reduce the pain releif- and the wound is incredibly tidy and healing well- its all going very smoothly!

I am on a soft food diet for another 6 weeks- which means that my slice of toast will have to wait a little bit but I think I can hold out!

Again, thank you to you all- even though I don't think thank you will ever cut it!

Kate :)
