Funerals are important in Ghanaian tradition as people are celebrated for days with music, dance, and prayers
Otago
My name is Koffie, an African drumming and dance teacher from the Volta Region of Ghana, now based in New Zealand. Recently, my beloved mum in Ghana passed away. She was my greatest supporter, the one who recognised the gift of rhythm and dance in me long before I did. Her encouragement and belief in me set me on the path to share my passion, teaching and performing African drumming and dance across the world, including Aotearoa New Zealand.
My mum lived by a simple yet powerful rule: “Do unto others what you would have them do to you.” She taught me to care for others, to respect everyone, and to give without expecting anything in return. I grew up watching her share the little she had, always saying that a closed hand can not give or receive blessings. Her kindness, generosity, and wisdom have shaped the way I live, teach, and connect with my community.
If you have joined me in drumming and dance workshops or simply believe in the power of community, please consider supporting me. No matter the size, your contribution will help me honor my mum’s life and carry forward her legacy of love and generosity.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness during this difficult time. Your support means more than words can express.
Koffie is an excellent friend and a talented generous multi facetted artist/ occupational therapist. It is important to me to support him in offering his mum the funerals she deserves.
The money collected will allow Koffie to host and feed people paying their last respect to his mum. Being the eldest son, he is expected to assume this responsibility.
