Donations will be passed on to the Saunders family to aid Luke's ongoing recovery
Auckland
On the 23rd of December a group of 8 close friends set off on a much deserved end of year trip to Thailand, however on the 4th of January an unfortunate event, outside of our control occurred. Luke Saunders a humble, selfless and much loved member of our friends was involved in a recreational motorbike accident where the brakes failed and caused him to crash receiving a severe head injury - thankfully he survived (he was wearing a helmet - not travelling at speed and had not consumed alcohol or medication). The accident happened on private property, however even with fully comprehensive travel insurance they have declined the claim based on the fact that he did not hold a full motorbike licence in New Zealand.
He fractured his skull and dislocated his rib cartilage from the sternum. As a result of the skull fracture he had air pockets between his skull and brain which was feared he would start fitting, this resulted in a 3 days stay in the ICU at Bangkok Hospital, Koh Samui. He had a 4 hour operation to insert plates to hold his skull in place but then required a further 3 days to ensure he didn't contract meningitis through the opening in his skull.
Financially this has costed him and his family close to $25,000NZD. His comprehensive travel insurance have made it very clear they will not be covering any of his medical or associated costs. He is unable to work due to his injury, Luke is a hard working guy who doesn't deserves this treatment from the insurance company - this accident was beyond his control.
Any amount donated will help this young man and his family recover from this accident, every dollar counts.
I am a close friend trying to do my part and help this situation
Anything fundraised will be used to pay back the medical costs incurred as well as recovery
A few words from the Family 14 February 2018
Luke & his family would like to thank you for your words of encouragement and kind donations towards his medical expenses.
He is progressing well and hopes to be back at work soon. He will need ongoing treatment from a plastic surgeon to try and restore movement to his face but overall his prognosis is good. His family have continued to challenge the insurance company’s decision but sadly still with no success.
On behalf of Luke & his family thank-you so much for all your help.
