Become a MATE for someone who needs support... free and subsidised life skills and facilitator training

Join us and help prevent family violence, depression and suicide and the associated isolation and loneliness

One of the most wonderful qualities about being a MATE is that you help to eliminate isolation - and the point of suicide is the most loneliest place on earth.

MATES Cafe is a network of trained Men and Women (including Teens, Elders and LGBT+) of all cultures and ethnicity who are available to meet with a person at their local cafe in a time of crisis and offer emotional support.

By having a diverse range of people from all ages, genders, ethnicity and cultures, we are able to provide each person in crisis with the option of meeting with a MATE who more likely understands their individual needs and challenges.

Help us train MATES Cafe Facilitators to save a life!

6,204 New Zealanders chose to take their own lives between 2007-2018. In this period, close to 100,000 NZ people made suicide attempts resulting in hospitalisation or emergency care. How many more have been thinking about suicide or who's attempts have gone unreported?

MATES Cafe Face-to-Face Meetings - A meeting with someone in need at a local cafe with a MATE to support them and help them gain direction.

MATES Cafe Support Meetings

Open conversations for those seeking support to overcome life’s challenges and a new way of approaching life and their relationships.

-------------------------------------

MATES Cafe Development Meetings

MATES Cafe facilitators receive ongoing development, training and support to continue inspiring others in becoming the best version of themselves.

-------------------------------------

Relationship breakdown and feelings of isolation can lead to relationship violence, depression and suicide. MATES Cafe helps to eliminate isolation by supporting people through crisis such as relationship breakdown, loss, grief and loneliness. Many lives have been saved and thousands of crisis averted over a hot cuppa with a MATE at a local cafe. The benefits of being a MATES Cafe Facilitator are numerous.

You will benefit immensely from our online and face-to-face training toward relationship empowerment, cognitive reprogramming and the emotional reset technique so you can be there for someone in time of need as well as improving all relationships in your own life. This knowledge is invaluable.

With monthly membership including ongoing support and supervision, you’ll also be connected with other like-minded MATES through social media groups and events. In addition, you will help change many lives by stopping the domino effect of someone who would have otherwise reacted badly to an emotionally triggered situation.

MATES Update 2019  24 April 2019

Hello all, we are just about ready to launch our online training and call out for potential MATES Cafe Facilitators across New Zealand... Over the past year we have been able to achieve many of our goals and are now asking for $8,350... considerably less than what was originally asked for... this will enable us to reach out to and train many more facilitators and achieve our purpose of lowering suicide and family violence in New Zealand by eliminating isolation and loneliness and empowering our community in relationship, communication and dealing with emotional triggers... Thank you for your kind support...

My husband recently took his own life and left his two sons behind. I feel I have been isolated from the community and friends and the cost of the funeral and other expenses has led me to put a second mortgage on my home. I don't have much to give any more, but I know that every cent is worth what MATES is doing. Thank you.
