I have to travel to Auckland to get potentially life saving injections from an immunologist every 4 weeks. I don't qualify for any funding.
Otago
I have chronic urticaria and angioedema, this means I break out in hives and my face/neck/throat etc swells reasonably regularly. On top of this, I have developed life-threatening allergies to a couple of things (that are present in a lot of everyday things).
Last year I was referred to a public immunologist. He was based in Christchurch so I had to travel. Only for him to kinda shrug his shoulders and leave me with nothing. I only got sicker and it's having an impact on my ability to work and live my life. So it was suggested that I find a private immunologist to get some help. The only person with any space in their calendar is based in Auckland. So I've been to see him, have had some tests etc, and the medication he first had me try hasn't been working very well. So we're going to trial omalizumab, a drug that binds to IgE to stop mast cells (etc) releasing all the stuff that causes these reactions. I have to get these injections every 4 weeks, and my specialist wants me to go there, at least for the first few.
This is where it gets tricky. I meet the criteria to get omalizumab for free. But the specialist costs $250 every time I see him (I've already spent $1000 on him plus $250 on their dietitian in the past month). I also have to pay to get there. The cheapest flights are $180 return but they're often $250-300. Then, because I have to wait at least 2 hours after the injection (due to risk of anaphylaxis) going there and back in 1 day is an almost impossible task. So I'm paying $100 to stay somewhere for the night. I've been fortunate to have my last 2 appointments over zoom (thanks Covid for Telehealth) but we can't inject me through the computer :)
I was lucky/blessed to have some savings but I've quickly chewed through them. In addition to all of the above costs, I've probably spent more than $2000 on adrenaline since September 2020. ACC were supposed to pay me back for those but haven't.
When I started seeing this specialist, I didn't anticipate needing a treatment that would require me to travel so frequently. I don't qualify for the national travel assistance scheme because he is a private doctor, and ACC won't fund this because it's treating an underlying disorder as opposed to anaphylaxis (which they cover because being exposed to an allergen is an accident).
So, here I am, swallowing my pride and asking for help. Even just a little bit.
travel and specialist fees. If we end up being able to move treatment to Dunedin, I will donate it to a charity of everyone's choosing
Thank you all 26 August 2021
Thank you all for you awhi and tautoko. It has been massively appreciated.
Most of you know that I was supposed to be in Auckland for my second set of shots today, but thanks to level 4 for stopping that.
Grateful for people in my life who helped find someone here in Dunedin at such short notice.
