My mom has a brain tumour - she needs surgery to get it removed, help us raise enough funds to cover the cost of surgery please!
Auckland
Almost a year ago my mom, 67yo, who lives in South Africa, was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Without a medical aid, she had to rely on the government health system for diagnoses and treatments – waiting up to 8 hours a time to see a Doctor or get a prescription for medication. After 8 months, MRI’s, EEG’s, 2 biopsies and many medication adjustments, we are no closer to knowing what kind of a tumour it is, what the treatment plan going forward would be or what her future holds than what we did when she was first diagnosed. Communication from the medical system has been confusing and unclear. We managed to get enough funds together to get her to a private neurologist who confirmed that she has a tumour on the left side of her brain, about the size of a chicken egg. It causes a lot of swelling in the brain, leading to black out episodes up to 4 times a day. From an energetic lady who loved to cook, garden and do creative hobbies, she is now unable to do anything as she never knows when an episode is going to strike. She can’t even cook meals for her and her husband and she sleeps her days away. The tumour needs to be removed to be able to see what type of tumour it is and to help her. The surgery will cost $15,000.00. We need to be able to get enough funds together to help cover the costs, if not all of it, then whatever we can, as well as any further MRI’s or treatments going forward. Every bit will help – please help us to give our mom a better chance of a normal life again.
On brain surgery to remove a brain tumour and any other medical costs if needed
3 Months on... 3 December 2023
Surgery was completed in August and the Doctors managed to remove 90% of the tumour. My mom has completed her radiation therapy and is now on some chemo tablets and we will know how successful the radiation therapy was by 19 December.
The hope of the surgery and treatments is to give my mom a bit more time to enjoy her life and to prevent the cancer from spreading to the rest of her brain and to stop it from affecting the functioning of the rest of her body. Unfortunately it is a glioblastoma, which is incurable, so the best we can hope for is more time for her to enjoy the life she has and for her overall health to be taken care of during this time. Of course, nothing is impossible for God, so our trust and hope lies in Him and we thank Him daily for the blessings during this time - as well as thanking all of the donors who enabled us to raise enough funds to cover the shortfall from the medical aid to have the surgery done.
