Help Me Take the NZ Government to the court of appeal to get a ruling they need to provide legal just torture redress

$36,015 of $60,000 goal
Given by 115 generous donors in over a year

this is to Fund half my legal fees to take the New Zealand government to court for failure to comply with UN rulings on torture redress.

In 1975 at just 15-years-old I was sent to Lake Alice psychiatric hospital. During my two month stay I was raped, drugged, and tortured with unmodified ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) several times over. As a result of this I have PTSD, nightmares, and brain damage. I have been unable to hold a job due to my memory loss. These effects have been long lasting and have had and continue to have a major impact on my life and that of my family's.

On the 16th of June 2022 the UN Committee Against Torture ruled that my time at Lake Alice amounted to torture and has urged the New Zealand government to provide appropriate redress and compensation. The government has not complied.

I am raising money to cover my legal fees in order to take the government of New Zealand to court because they have refused to abide by the Van Boven principles and guidelines for torture redress. These principles state that victims of human rights violations have the right to seek redress and reparation, that remedies in international human rights law are a requirement to obtain justice, and that reparation should, as far as possible, wipe out all the consequences of the illegal act. The New Zealand government's failure to comply with these guidelines puts in breach of international law.

If the case is settled early and there is excess funds those will be used to help other survivors fight for justice. If I do not reach the goal amount I will need to take out a personal loan to make up the difference.

Use of funds

I am seeking support to cover the initial stage of legal action I am taking against the New Zealand Government for allegedly breaching international law concerning the prevention of child torture. These funds will be used to cover some of the legal fees required to commence the case.

Legal fees can escalate significantly as litigation proceeds. While this page is focused on raising funds for the early stages, I may update the funding target in future if further costs arise.

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
