Help needed for Talor and Aidee after flood

  • Update from Aidee and Talor

      31 December 2021

    Kia ora tātou,

As the year comes to an end, we wanted to send you mucho gratitude for your support this year. We hope you are reading this from the beach or some relaxing location as it really has been a very crappy year. As well as the lockdowns and flood and loss of our work, there has been a lot of death on Talor's side of the family which has been very sad indeed.

Unfortunately and frustratingly, we have very little to update you all on the house. We still have no idea whether we are dealing with a total rebuild or whether we can save part of the house; worst case scenario would be we can't build at all. The council has been as MIA as you can get and the house remains red carded and inaccessible as our belongings rot in the garage, yet the fallen trees are growing beautiful leaves inside it - it's all very strange down there. The sleepout and trampoline still lie 50 metres from where they used to stand and we are eager to start clearing all the fallen trees. Although we know very little, the geotech engineers did indicate that we will have to re-divert the stream to where mother nature wants her to go. We think there is little chance the lake will be restored to how it was so we will just have to get creative when the time comes.

Thank you so much again for all your donations and kind words or acts of support. My sister and brother in law gifted us their car, many people lent a hand early on and cooked us food; friends Masako and Kate and Anna all helped with accomodation. We have moved three times since the flood and luckily our daughter is unbelievably resilient and has just gone along with the flow, always referring to our house as the 'broken house that we are gonna fix'. But a huge thanks to you all and I know a lot of you are keen to help when we do a working bee - but that may still be a while off - hopefully February/March.

If you are on Instagram, we will do more updates at @parekuradreamlands if you are at all interested in the (slow) progress.

Wishing you a much more straightforward (but still fun) 2022 and again we feel so lucky to have so many amazing friends, acquaintances and complete strangers who came to our rescue.

    THANK YOU X

    Aidee, Talor and Awa xx

      9 October 2021

    Kia ora anō!

We wanted to reach out with a little update and thinking of you during this current lockdown. What a crazy time!

Thank you so very much for your kind donation. We are completely overwhelmed by your generosity. It has been quite the unexpected and eventful lockdown. Gah! Not a lot to report unfortunately as level restrictions have made things even slower than they already would be with the insurance company and council. We are slightly daunted by what is ahead of us but for now we have some short term accommodation and we are both hoping to return to work as soon as the restrictions lessen and the film industry can kick back into action. We hope this for the sake of all the industries that are affected and I guess we can return to a weird kind of normal. It's such an uncertain time - challenging for everyone.

    Kia manawanui.

Sending lots of love to your whānau from ours and thanks again from the bottom of our hearts,

    Aidee, Talor and Awa xx

    Kia ora!

We are absolutely astonished at the wonderful support we have received and wanted to thank you sincerely for your donation.

We have managed to retrieve all the written off cars off the property and found some temporary accommodation which we will move into soon.

Level 4 has been challenging and although it would be wonderful to see our friends and family at this time, we have still felt all the support and love nonetheless. Thank you so very much from all of us,

Talor, Aidee, Awa and Nana Sue xx

  • Use of funds

They are still assessing the extent of the damage but already it is clear that getting their home, possessions and lives back is going to be very costly and an ongoing process that will not all be covered by insurance.

The money will be spent on:

    - Immediate relief: including temporary accommodation and any items they lost and need urgently.

    - Salvaging what’s left: the bottom floor of the house was washed out and the property decimated- cars were swept away and lots of stuff is now buried in debris. There is a massive job to clear debris and try to get the property in a state where work of any kind can even begin. Costs here involve diggers, other costly machinery and much more.

    - As the next steps reveal themselves we will update here but please know that every bit helps so much and will be much needed. Beyond what’s listed above this is looking like a case of starting from scratch- not just the house but everything around it and most of what was inside.

    Aroha mai, aroha atu

    Love given, love returned

Updated images of the damage in the gallery below.

There are also before and after images to better understand the extend of the damage. Their haven in the bush is now completely destroyed! The lake full with mud and trees. Utterly heartbreaking. Please keep donations going, they are so needed!
