I am finally presented with an opportunity to live my dream of becoming an Olympic athlete but unfortunately Karate gets minimal funding.

Auckland

After 16 years of practising Karate, and representing New Zealand since 2008, I am finally presented with an opportunity to live my dream of becoming an Olympic athlete. Olympics 2020 will be the first Olympics that includes Karate, and will be my only opportunity to attend an Olympic Games as I will be too old for my division at the next one. I have competed multiple times on the world stage where I have accomplished 7th at a Junior World Championships, 3rd at University World Championships, and 2nd at the Shito Ryu World Championships. In the past I have also brought home Oceania and Commonwealth gold medals for New Zealand. After many ups and downs over the last couple of years with injuries, I am finally ready to get back in the game. I WILL be a champion once again. The build for Olympics starts now. These are the competitions I will need to attend (and do well in) to build my world ranking to start 2019 in a strong position for selection:

NZ Open - April

Oceania New Zealand - May

K1 Turkey - June

K1 Croatia - July

NZ Nationals - July

K1 Germany - September

K1 Chile - September

K1 Japan - October

Senior Worlds Spain - November

K1 China - December

As you can imagine, getting to these competitions will not be cheap. I have estimated the total I will need to raise for the year is $15,000 minimum in which I will try and accumulate over 3 bouts of fundraising throughout the year. Unfortunately Karate is still a minority sport in NZ therefore funding is either very minimal or non-existent. Any financial help would be very much appreciated!

2% Effective Fee
On average, fundraisers pay just 2% to use Givealittle. This is one of the lowest effective fees in New Zealand fundraising. We charge a 5% platform fee to cover the cost of running the platform. Because most donors choose to top up their donation to cover this fee, the effective cost paid by fundraisers is about 2%. That means around 98 cents of every dollar raised goes to the cause.
