In just a short time, our whānau lost everything. Please help with the enormous challenge of rebuilding their lives from nothing.
Matakana Island, Bay of Plenty Region
On the 11th of March 2026, tragedy struck the Murray whānau home on Matakana Island when a devastating fire destroyed the family home. Emergency services did everything they could, by the time they arrived the home was already gone. Sadly, nothing could be saved, and our whanau did not have insurance, all that remains from their life savings are the ashes.
This tragedy comes at a time when the whānau are already carrying deep grief. Just one week before the fire, aunty lost her brother and now must also face the heartbreak of losing their home and everything they owned. It has been an incredibly heavy and painful time for the family.
One of the greatest losses in the fire was uncle’s building tools. To those who know him, they were never just tools — they were his life’s work. They represented his pride, his skill, his independence, and his dedication to helping his whānau and supporting his community and the loss of the very tools he would have used to help rebuild his whānau home.
With humility, we are asking for support on behalf of this whānau, because they would never ask themselves. Losing their home with no insurance, their livelihood while still mourning a recent loss, they now need the strength of their community to help them rebuild.
“If you can help, please donate with koha, tools, ladders, scaffolding — and if you can’t, sharing this page is another way you can support this whānau.”
Thank you for helping our whānau stand back up again.
