Help plant the Red Zone!

$510 donated
Given by 15 generous donors in one year

Help us plant natives in the OARC (Ōtākaro-Avon River Corridor)

Christchurch, Canterbury

Avon-Ōtākaro Forest Park is a volunteer Group committed to establishing a native ecosystem within the Christchurch Red Zone by planting suitable areas and maintaining the pockets of native strands that already exist in the Red Zone.

We maintain 10 sites of ecological significance as well as develop Horseshoe Lake Reserve with the CCC Rangers and the development of a biodiversity exemplar in Brooker Ave.

Our Vision is for the development of Red Zone Forest Park open to all that includes areas for education, sympathetic recreation, community engagement and an area of native habitat that will enable our native species to thrive in Christchurch and for it to become a significant waypoint for migrating species.

Our largest commitment is for the development of our site around Brooker Reserve on Brooker Ave between the Avon-Ōtākaro River and Travis Wetland - an area which may one day become part of the Waitikiri Eco Sanctuary.

We enjoy strong relationships and support from Rata Foundation, Trees the Count, Trees for Canterbury and the Christchurch City Council, but as a small group of dedicated volunteers we are always on the look out for more support to help make the dream of a native park for Christchurch a reality.

Any funds raised from this page will go directly to the purchase of plants for us to further develop our sites - in particular our largest site at Brooker Ave.

Our Give a Little Planting  11 June 2023

A massive thank-you to everyonewho has supported us through this page. With all the amazing volunteers that turned out today we managed to plant over 400 native plants at Brooker Reserve. With over 30 volunteers it all went amazingly well, followed by a bbq afterwards. These plants were funded by our supporters on this Give-a-little page and Greening the Red Zone who provided the donated funds.
