Help us give our golden girl Poncha a second chance at a happy, healthy life as she faces unexpected complications after life-saving surgery
Auckland
Poncha, our sweet golden retriever puppy, has faced more in her short life than most dogs ever will. We brought her and her brother home in February at 9 weeks old, full of excitement and love.
But something wasn’t right. Poncha was constantly leaking urine. After multiple vet visits and tests, we finally got a diagnosis: ectopic ureter—a congenital defect where one ureter doesn’t connect properly to the bladder. This meant she had no control over her bladder a risk of long-term damage to her kidneys and bladder.
We booked her in for specialist surgery to correct it. The procedure involved relocating the ureter so her bladder could function properly. Thankfully, the surgery went well.
But our hopes were short-lived.
While her left ureter (the problematic one) is healing well, her right kidney, ureter, and bladder—which were previously healthy—have now developed encrustations (mineral build-up). This rare complication.
We’re now working with specialists to plan the next steps. She’ll likely need another major surgery to flush out and remove the build-up. It’s a complex and costly process, but necessary to give her the future she deserves.
We want to be clear—this is not her breeder’s fault. Golden retrievers are unfortunately prone to ectopic ureters, even in carefully planned litters.
If you’re in a position to help, even a small contribution would mean the world to us. Every dollar goes directly to Poncha’s care and recovery.
Thank you for being part of her journey.
All funds will go towards vet bills to treat her ectopic ureter and extremely rare bacterial infection in the kidneys, ureters and bladder.
Heartbroken 💜💔 2 June 2025
I would love to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated. Unfortunately we lost our little girl on Wednesday evening after her urine culture came back and it was resistant to every antibiotic 💔 her kidney values were also going back up so we made the decision to take her to the beach for one last swim, eat some chocolate, had some ginger nuts and salted chips and let her cross the rainbow bridge while she was still happy 🌈 we would like to thank you for all your support and your donations have gone towards her vet bills and cremation. Thank you again for all of your love and support 💜
