6 weeks ago our lives were turned upside down when our darling 14-year-old girl Portia Rose Swan was diagnosed with a brain tumour; a 4.5 x 2.5-centimetre growth on the left front side of her brain. This devastating diagnosis came after a series of random & admittedly terrifying seizures for the first time in her life. After a CT scan, 2 MRI scans and a couple of postponed surgery dates, Portia was finally able to have extractive brain surgery.
Although the surgery went as well as we could hope for, devastatingly, not all of the cancer could be removed. Some of it was dangerously close to the cognitive part of the brain, potentially affecting speech and movement, and was considered too risky.
We are now a few weeks post this surgery, and since then there have been more tests. Based on the latest pathology results, we now know that Portia’s tumour is grade 3 Astrocytoma. Despite all of this, Portia is a true champion; so grounded and taking it all in her stride. The Swan family know what Portia is up against and wants to give her the very best chance in the fight against this.
The next steps here are for Portia to undergo a series of Radiation & Chemotherapy treatments. We are also looking into private immunotherapy treatment, vitamin c infusions and overseas clinical trials.

As most of you all know on November 21st last year Portia underwent an awake craniotomy to remove the remaining ACTIVE tumour that was still left behind from her last operation. Portia was one of the youngest people to undergo the operation as Andrew was confident it would suit her relaxed personality. Sadly a GRADE 3 - Astrycotoma brain tumour wants to MUTATE - that's the nature of this beast and we are taking every step we can to prevent this from aggressively wanting to grow back and as one of our oncologists defined it to us it's a bit like LIVING ON A FAULT LINE - COSTS are never ending for treatments both conventional and unconventional and drugs to keep your child alive are outrageous. This journey is a continuing moving platform in terms of the treatments that Portia undertakes and we are trying to be one step ahead of a potential mutation and wanting to make the right choice of treatments for Portia moving forward, one of the options available is a drug called IVOSIDENIB the cost for this drug is $30,000 per month so as you can see there is a lot to digest and work through.
