St Francis Maruma School is a Primary School in rural Zimbabwe which was founded in the 1940s by the Catholic Church. It was then taken from the Catholic Church by the Zimbabwean government in the 1980s and was handed over to the local council. The economic struggles in Zimbabwe since then has seen the dilapidation of the school over the years. Parents in this community do not have jobs but they are expected to fund all the renovations on any new buildings. They are also expected to buy text books and stationery for their children. This has become an impossible task for the families who have no government support whatsoever. The buildings are dilapidated and children are learning under the trees. Families have no jobs, surviving on subsistence living (living from hand to mouth off the land) but lately because of the global warming it has been dry and they have no means of survival as this is an area with no irrigation. The children are going to school in empty stomach to learn under trees.

There is no running water at the school. There is one block of pit toilet which is used by both girls and boys with no running water to wash their hands after using the toilet. In the face of the global pandemic Covid-19 this school is now a healthy hazard to the community. This whole community is likely to perish if one child catches the virus. Right now these children are at home. They have no means of online learning. But we know how important being literate is for every child in this world so I need your help.

I am therefore, appealing for your help to resuscitate this school. We could start by providing a 3 classroom block so that the children can learn inside a classroom this coming winter season. Please put yourself in their shoes, I really hope by doing so you will find it within your heart to help. A little goes a long way. There is so much joy in helping strangers especially those vulnerable children who are extremely poor like the ones at St Francis Maruma School.
