Help Rocky's recovery costs: support needed after tragic Myers Park incident

Our 1yr old Cavoodle, Rocky ingested amphetamines in Myers Park, leading to $15,000+ in vet bills. Any help with expenses is appreciated.

Auckland

Less than one week after our beloved Sammy, a 3-year-old Cavoodle passed away from lymphoma cancer, our gorgeous Rocky, a 1-year-old Cavoodle went for a walk in Myers Park and unbelievably ingested amphetamines. It is suspected the source of this could have been vomit in the park.

Rocky was critically ill and had to hospitalised at ARC Freemans Bay emergency care for 4 days. Our total vet bills over the last month for both dogs has been well over $18,000 and unfortunately, we didn't have pet insurance.

We have reached out to the Auckland Central MP's office, the Waitemata Local Board and the Auckland Council to highlight the dangers of hazardous substances in and around a children's playground and next to a kindergarten. Hopefully together as a community we can find solutions to avoid animals and children being at risk.

Any assistance towards covering Rocky’s vet bills would be immensely appreciated.

Use of funds

Reimbursing vet expenses, with any additional funds going to the first year of pet insurance for Rocky and an ARC fund for any further instances of this happening in the park.

Six weeks on from Rocky's traumatic event  17 October 2024

We have had such a positive response from the community and local Council. The park has had increased police and Auckland Council warden patrols, and the Wardens have been going above and beyond, fossicking in known gathering spaces within the bushes surrounding the park. Today we saw them recover a large bag from one of those spaces where the community suspects drug use is happening.

We do still need to be vigilant though. Rocky found a Tux dog biscuit that had a suspicious green addition to it hidden in the leaves. We reached out to Purina, who have arranged to test it and check what it is, as it looks like possum poison, which scary and more malicious.

With that said, we still love living in the inner city - it's vibrancy and proximity to so much culture and events. We are now just more careful with where we take our pup and keep him in sight at all times.

I've attached a video link that was posted on Stuff of Rocky and the other two dogs who also ingested drugs in the park.

Much love to you all, Heather, Rhys, Jack and Rocky

Thank you Amanda. Rocky is a fighter and back to full strength. Have to watch him like a hawk though, as he is still as inquisitive as ever. We are truly grateful for the support that our community has given us.
