Wow it's done!!! What an incredible 10 days (actually Sam finished the race on the morning of Day 9). I'm sure many of you were glued to your screen watching that pink dot race from Horse Station to station. Sam was first off the starting line and in the lead and leading group for almost half the race, until Station 12, when she decided to stay with her riding buddies while they sat out vet penalties instead of heading out with two other riders. Even so, she kept in touch with those two and almost caught them up until she too was forced to sit out a penalty at the second to last station. She ended up crossing the line in 8th equal place, amongst the leading group of riders who swapped the lead between them for the whole race. What an amazing achievement, and all made possible by the wonderful support from all of you. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Sam has been overwhelmed by all the support and congratulations she has received. She'll be putting together video and words in the coming weeks so we can all get a rider's eye view of what it was like to ride in the toughest Hore race in the world!!

Today at just after midday Mongolian time Sam, with her UK riding buddy Sean, crossed the finish line equal 5th over the line after riding a staggering 1,313 km in approximately 94 hours of actual riding time. They were part of a group of 11 riders who dominated the race from start to finish. We are super proud of Sam's performance in this most challenging environment, her top ten finish of course, but even more importantly the way she conducted herself. Her care and attention to the magnificent horses who carried her across the incredible terrain of the Mongolian steppes and the bonds she created with her fellow riders speak volumes about her character. Thank you all for supporting this most extraordinary journey.

  • Sam's charity

Thank you all for your incredible generosity and support of Sam as she rides her dream of competing in the Mongol Derby. Sam's other passion is the Ocean and she has chosen Te Wairua O Te Moananui - Ocean Spirit Charitable Trust as the charity she is riding for. This is very close to our hearts as we are Trustees of Ocean Spirit and are heavily involved in the Ocean conservation, education and advocacy work the Trust does. One of our current projects is the restoration of the kelp forests in Tutukaka Harbour. Once Sam's Derby expenses are covered, any additional funding will go towards this and other Ocean Spirit projects.

  • Interview with Kea Kids

      15 July 2022

Sam was recently interviewed by Kea Kids about the Derby. It's a great interview with Kea Kid, Lottie interviewing Sam and great footage of Sam (and Lottie) riding Sam's horse, Marmite. When you see these young people being role models for each other you can't help but feel optimistic about the future.

  • The journey begins

It was with a great sense of excitement (and a little parental concern) that we waved Sam through the departure gates at Christchurch Airport on Tuesday. She has now landed in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia and is settling in to her accomodation and getting a feel for this fascinating part of the world. All the riders gather on the 20th for some introductions before 3 days of onsite familiarisation with the horses, the herder families who are hosting them and the 1000km course they will ride. The race starts on the 23rd July. We'll post a link to live updates as soon as it comes through.

  • Final preparations

Sam flies out to Mongolia on Tuesday 12th July. We all had the chance to join her on one last ride on Thursday (also part of her 21st birthday celebration). We did a 6 hour trek across the mighty Rakaia River, starting at lake Coleridge and making our way through ice covered streams, across wide river stone flats and fording the many braids of the river itself. At Blackball Station we climbed above the river (including some exciting uphill cantering) for lunch before retracing our path back to Lake Coleridge village just on dark. A huge thank you to James from High Country Horse Treks for an incredible day and the perfect warmup for Sam as she faces navigating river crossings, mountain climbs and swamps on the Derby

  • Six weeks to the starting line

It's only six weeks until the start of the 2022 Derby and Sam is well into her final preparations. She's riding up to 16 horses a day, including track work, bringing on young Polo ponies and the odd beach gallop. She's booked her flights and now our race is on to reach the funding goal so she can concentrate on the actual race. Check out the short video below of the race co-founder describing how it all came about and what the riders can expect.
