Fundraising to help Sam Edney travel to Mongolia to ride in the world's toughest horse race.

Christchurch, Canterbury

Our daughter Sam's passion in life is working with horses, and over the past few years she has turned that passion into a career.

In July 2022, Sam has been selected to compete in the world's longest and toughest horse race, The Mongol Derby. This is an incredible and life changing opportunity.

The race is an approximation of Genghis Khan’s ancient horse messenger system, covering 1000km of the wild Mongolian steppe. Riders swap mounts every 40kms, using a GPS and map to find their way. They must also rely on the hospitality of local herding families to feed and house them. It’s the ultimate test of rider endurance and horsemanship, as well as navigation and survival skills. https://equestrianists.com/mongol-derby/

Riding in the Derby has been Sam’s dream for the past 4 years, and after a long selection process and a few setbacks thanks to covid, she finally has the opportunity to go on the adventure of a lifetime.

We're super proud of our daughter Sam for getting selected from over 400 applicants worldwide to be one of 45 competitors and I know she'll do us all proud. GO SAM !! 🏇

Use of funds

Sam has worked hard to pay for this adventure, and she's managed to cover the entry fee, $22,000 (with help from friends and family). The final hurdle is funding the airfares and other travel expenses, as well as any extra equipment she needs.

Wow She did it!!!  4 August 2022

Wow it's done!!! What an incredible 10 days (actually Sam finished the race on the morning of Day 9). I'm sure many of you were glued to your screen watching that pink dot race from Horse Station to station. Sam was first off the starting line and in the lead and leading group for almost half the race, until Station 12, when she decided to stay with her riding buddies while they sat out vet penalties instead of heading out with two other riders. Even so, she kept in touch with those two and almost caught them up until she too was forced to sit out a penalty at the second to last station. She ended up crossing the line in 8th equal place, amongst the leading group of riders who swapped the lead between them for the whole race. What an amazing achievement, and all made possible by the wonderful support from all of you. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Sam has been overwhelmed by all the support and congratulations she has received. She'll be putting together video and words in the coming weeks so we can all get a rider's eye view of what it was like to ride in the toughest Hore race in the world!!
