Saving One of the last remaining New Zealand Trading Scows
Kaiapoi, Canterbury
The Alwin G Heritage Trust has the opportunity to purchase and restore one of New Zealand's last trading scows. The Alwin G Heritage Trust had previously bid to purchase the Scow Success (Formally Alwin G) but were unsuccessful. Following the sad passing of the Owner The Alwin G Heritage Trust were approached by the deceased estate with a more realistic asking price, The deceased estate is not in a position to be able to donate the vessel to the Alwin G Heritage Trust.
The Success (Alwin G) was built in 1925 and was the last scow built for commercial use she was renamed Success in 1937 and moved to Wellington in the 1960's where she took part in the Wahine rescue operations, Success was later instrumental in the Marlborough green lipped mussel business.
There are only 4 original New Zealand Scows left in existence out of around 140.
Alwin G Heritage Trust was set up in 2016 with the aim of purchasing and restoring one of New Zealand's last wooden trading scows. Scows were trucks of sea and played an important role in the transport of freight around NZ from the 1800's to 1970's. In August 2024 the Alwin G Heritage Trust changed its name to Kaipuke Kaiapoi Heritage Trust
The main goal is to secure ownership of the historic vessel as well as the purchase of fittings which will be used to start the restoration process. If the goal is not reached the funds raised will be used to support similar Maritime Heritage groups
