Help send Stewart Island/Rakiura school students to Wellington so they can experience the culture and activities of a big city!
Southland
Every year, Stewart Island/Rakiura hosts heaps of school camps from all over the country.
But…where do island kids go for camp? The Big Smoke, of course! Every couple of years, students from the Halfmoon Bay School travel north to our capital city Wellington for an experience-of-their-lifetimes. They go to Te Papa (national museum), the Beehive (seat of government), Weta Studios (LOTR!) and do all sorts of other amazing urban/cultural activities. Covering airfare, accommodation, meals, and tickets etc is no small financial feat; it costs thousands. The cost of the trip relies on fundraising from the students and parents. We’re tasked with coming up with ways to raise the money and here’s one of mine:
On 5th October I’ll be participating in the Rakiura Challenge, a 34 km (21 mi) run in Rakiura National Park. I won’t lie, it’s daunting! Muddy and hilly and my knees are nervous. My 9-year old boy has volunteered to be his mummy’s training partner. He runs alongside me on the shorter training runs, helps taste-test the gooey GUs, and overall he’s been a wonderful encouraging wee soul.
We’re hoping you will help sponsor this run as a donation to the Wellington trip. All funds raised will go to cover the cost of the upcoming camp. How about $21? A dollar-a-mile would make us smile! Or $34 if you’re feeling metric? Any amount will help inspire me through the mud and would be most appreciated by Moby and his classmates at Halfmoon Bay School. Thank you!
My son's class needs the fund to go from Stewart Island to Wellington for their school camp which occurs once every two years. The students and their parents are responsible for raising money to cover the cost of airfare, accommodation, etc.
All funds will go toward airfare, accommodation, meals and activities for the students in my son's year (and the year above) at Halfmoon Bay School on Stewart Island/Rakiura to visit Wellington on the next "school camp."
"Done and mudded" 6 October 2019
WOW. Thank you so much to you all. Your generosity motivated me through hours of deep mud and steep hills yesterday. After five hours of running, I came out of the park and onto that last stretch of road through the village to the finish line. The school kids had gathered at the road side with signs, cheering all the runners, and when I passed by they fell into step with me and escorted me to the finish line. On behalf of Moby and his classmates and their parents and me: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, four thousand times over, THANK YOU. xo
Thanks Greg!
Thanks heaps Sarah!
