Sharon needs an unfunded drug to treat her cancer.
Nationwide
Sharon has had an autoimmune illness for about 15 years, a type of Scleroderma. 8 years ago her much loved husband was found to have a rare type of cancer (throat and stomach) which required surgery, then radiotherapy for many months. He couldn't eat proper meals afterwards. Sharon was his full time career which included speciality meal management, and intensive nursing of him as he got more frail. Finally early in July, 2 days after her birthday he had a massive heart attack and died in hospital. A few days after his funeral Sharon found she couldn't breathe fully so went to her GP who sent her to hospital. There they drained fluid off her lung and after analysis found cancer cells which were tracked back to her ovary and a tumour. Signs of the cancer were missed owing to the focus being on her husband's health and the underlying autoimmune disease. Chemotherapy was started but she had a severe reaction to one of the funded drugs so needs to continue with an unfunded drug (Nab - Paclitaxel) which is very expensive each time. It has to be given in a private hospital setting as the government won't administer unfunded medications in a public Hospital setting. In total Sharon's treatment with this drug will cost approximately $25,000.
