Help Snow and her surprise baby Sage

  • Sage and Snow are bouncing off the walls

Sage has now finished her twice daily antibiotics and she has had her vet check with a clear blood result. She is def ready to get out in the paddock and cause trouble. That will happen tomorrow! Sage is much bigger and more feisty, Snow has to tell her off sometimes when shes being too extra.

I just want to say thanks so much to everyone that gave donations to my girls, it really made a good dent in the bills. I will close the page after the weekend! Thanks again

Izzy Anna and I drove to palmerston north saturday monring to get the girls. it was a bit of a fraught drive back to Te Horo as Sage now being very energetic and mischeivous wanted to climb all around the float while traveling. The girls have settled well into their stable. They are due for a vets check on Wednesday and can hopefully move into a small paddock this week. Now just the bill to pay :/

The vets have given the all clear for the girls to come home, it was supposed to be yesterday but took a while for the blood work to come back. They will be on box rest for a week. Sage has put on 6kg and is drinking like a boss, every 3 minutes! Feeling so relieved to be seeing them soon! Funny that Snow and I were meant to be show jumping in Foxton today, how life moves quick...

Thanks to the awesome team at Massey Vets getting these updates every day, all is progressing well and Sage is finding the box plenty big enough to play games and have fun. Hopefully Izzy and I will be going to get the babies on Friday!

Sage is growing and her lax front fetlocks are straightening up. The vets are waiting for cultures to come back from the lab so that Sage can transition to an oral antibiotic. She no longer has any swelling in her joints and release soon is looking likely! Snow and Sage will spend their nursing months at Te Horo with Anna and Tala. They need to stay on box rest for a week as too much movement is not reccomended for Sage until she is stronger.Tomorrow Nicole and Anna will be foal proofing and preparing for the babies arrival. Nicole is spending a lot of time researching foal care!

  • Who is Sage's Dad?

You must be wondering how Snow got in foal and who to.

Archie is Anna's ( Snows Old owners) young stallion who she has had since he was 8 months old. Snow was Archies babysitter in his early days, helping to teach him how to be a grown up horse. As Archie got older Snow and Archie were kept apart of course. However we have tracked back to November last year when for 30 minutes the horses were together after going through the electric tape. Snow and Archie hadnt seemed very interested in each other at the time and it was such a short time period nobody suspected Snow could of got pregnant! Archie is a Hanoverion Arab by the stallion Disteldave (Distilfink x Kilkenny Smoky Crystal) and he is out of a purebred arab mare. He stands at around 15.1 hh. Sage has been stamped with Archies and Disteldaves white markings.

  • Update from the vets

Sage and Snow have done really well over the weekend!

Sage is getting progressively brighter putting on 2kg in 2 days. She is now playing games and exhibits a cheeky and loving personality.

The Vet assistants have said that she loves a scratch on the chin.

Snow is very loving and busy rebuilding her energy and eating well.

The vets have kindly sent a photo of them both looking stronger and happier. Unfortunately they are both still quite fragile and will be at the hospital until Friday at this stage. Fingers crossed for early release!

  • Treatment Update

The vets have sent through an update - Sage is improving!

She is drinking on her own, looking bigger and most importantly, a lot more playful! Meanwhile Snow is a devoted, calm and caring mum.

Thankfully the outlook is looking much better for Sage and we will know more once test results come back from the lab in the next couple days.

Sadly Nicole is unable to visit her babies due to strict COVID protocols and the need to keep the barn sterile.

Thank you so much to everyone who has made a contribution so far. Your kindness is overwhelming.

  • A downwards turn...

Although Sage was a big surprise she was instantly loved by (Grandma?) Nicole and her friends at Makara.

A follow up appointment was arranged Snow and Sage to be on the safe side given that Snow had been hiding her pregnancy and Sage was a little on the small side. Sadly when the vet arrived on Friday Sage's temperature was 2 degrees up and she was less alert than she should have been with some swelling in the joints.

It was advised that Snow and Sage be urgently taken to Massey Equine Hospital due to the appearance of infection. Nicole dropped everything and rushed them both to Massey where they were whisked away by a team of competent vets. Nicole was told at that stage Sage had only a 50% chance of survival....

A big thank you to Carole, Anna, Sarah, and Tina for helping get the girls to Massey.

  • Surprise Arrival!

      3 October 2021

On Tuesday it was noticed that Snow had some strange symptoms so the vet was called to check it out.

But on Thursday, when Margaret from Vets on Riverbank arrived to check Snow something was definitely up... Nicole called the horses and Snows paddock mates Harry and Belle came running but no Snow!

Nicole found Snow on the big hill paddock with a tiny little foal at foot, Snow had been so clever and already delivered and cleaned up her foal (Surprise Mum!).

Both were brought down off the hill, and the vet took charge. The little foal had to be given colostrum as it wasn't clear how much it had received.

Snow knew what she was doing but everyone else was freaking out and trying to establish if the two of them would be okay.
