Stanley is a Christian friend in Kenya helping run an orphanage. Their goal is to educate and get sponsors for the kids in the orphanage.

Hawke's Bay

Stanley Seka worked in Hastings, New Zealand over 7 years ago at a local outdoor education camp Stoney Creek Ranch serving the community and running kids programs. He applied for NZ residency spending all he earned on it and all his savings. He eventually ran out of cash and had to go back to Kenya, he now again lives in Mombasa helping run the boys orphanage Rapha house: https://www.raphahousekenya.com/. I'd Like to help Stan get his own house.

So the other day I'm watching Al Jazeera and I see riots on the streets of Kenya, worried for Stan I make contact on Facebook, this is the un-edit transcript:

Me:

How are you Seeing news clips (al jazeera) of people fighting in streets over food shortages and some major flooding. You doing ok. Is it all over the country?

Stanley:

My parents live in western kenya where there is flooding that you read. During this time we have malaria creeping in and cholera due to lack of clean water. So we need a lot of prayers as the government has called for lockdown but they can't help with basics. I am doing well so far, just my parents are both sick with malaria and I have no way to help them. Please also pray for that. I told my mom go to the doctor to be checked but they couldn't look at her without money so she went back home. If I had money I could've paid for her to go to the hospital so yeah they’re really in need of money for treatment. There is a vaccination but you gotta buy them and if you don’t have a job and money you cannot afford it and so you just survive. We have had people shift from their homes to a higher ground to avoid flooding and deaths.

Food is there but the government is only looking after the rich, famous and their relatives. The poor and middle class have no chance. We can't afford the basics, like food and fresh water. You can't work and not allowed outside at the same time nothing is coming from the government to feed your family so that's why people are fighting over food, their kids are going hungry while they aren't allowed to go look for food.

There is less food and prices have hiked and no jobs to earn money to buy them. We do buy fresh water so also you have to travel a distant to get it and prices also have hiked. Some people can't wash their hands for corona as they need that water to drink. We do move around but between the hours of 6am to 7pm after that it is curfew. We've had police kill people by beating them over curfew. We have province lockdowns so you can't travel from one province to another.

We can still meet with friends but over a limited time. I had some books sent to me from a church member at OBC, I went to pick them up from the post office, when I got there, they had opened the parcel written down the prices of those books in NZD and charged me about 20% of the price of each books price in dollars. So make sure no price tags as they look at that and over charge you.

But I am very grateful for your support and prayers

Well myself and coworkers gave him some money. You see when he worked here he had a westpac bank account and still has it. He can use the card over there and so we can instantly help him if he needs it. Overnight i got this reply:

Stanley:

My parents are so thankful, my mom is gonna see the doctor in the next few hours after securing an appointment then shopping afterwards and my dad had his treatment stopped because he didn't had enough money to continue so now he is going to continue with the treatment after paying the balances he had last time. They couldn't stop being appreciative on the phone and praying for you and your friend. God is good!!!

I asked him how much it was to live there, he said he spent 200NZD a month on rent and that was always a pressure:

Stanley:

For sure bro, rent is always a burden and am so thankful for your kind and generous friends. You can't believe how tight my budget was and this is just beyond words. I have so many people around me who can also benefit from this gifts. I'll share a little with them as a thank you to God and you guys. For the medication if it is starting, you can just buy tablets from a pharmacy for about 500 kes which is equivalent to almost 10nzd, but for them it is a hospital issue so it will be more. But you have sent enough to cater for everything plus transport and food bro thanks.

Stans a good guy looking after his family, the orphanage and his friends, he has a desire to own his own home as that would free up a lot of cash to help others, I asked and it turns out a free hold (lower quater) house is $25,000NZD (about 1.2 Million KES) . Now I don't have that, but maybe we all do?

UPDATE:

Spoke to Stan, while we might not get to a house price he says What has been given so far is Amazing, at the least this will be like those "small business loans (though it doesn't nee to be paid back) with it he said he could start (50,000kes = 800NZD):

1. Transport business,

we have these little tricycles here used mainly for private transport like uber where you can make kes 1500 a day. You can get one for kes 200k

2. Small retail shop.

This one can cost kes 150k to start it.

3. Poultry farming.

You can rent a place for kes 10k per month or if you own a place, have chicken for meat and eggs. This one can take kes 70k to start then earn around kes 2k a day.

4. Buy farmland in the village.

You can buy half an acre or even an acre for kes 200k and this is a huge piece of land. Then you can have crops like onions, tomatoes, potatoes, poultry etc. Then sell them for a good amount as they are the most needed food in our country.

The list goes on and on so no matter where this fundraising takes us it will have a great impact on my life as I have a whole bunch of options of things I can do.

Stan was born in Western Kenya he moved to Mombasa in his later teen years. A home for orphan boys took him in and he started working for them to stay off the streets, over time he raise enough money to get himself to New Zealand. This is where I meet him.

Use of funds

If we raise the funds Stan will be able to buy his own home, no longer paying rent will be life changing for him and his family, and the orphanage he helps run. Any extra money will go to the orphanage.

The end of the story..  8 August 2020

Hi All

An update on Stan.

While we fell short of what was need to buy a house the money still makes a huge impact for him.

He has bought an Acre of Land near his family village. He says its good land because its near government radio master so it has lighting, security and road access. One day he intends to build a brick house on it.

Until then it is cropped in maize this gives his family produce to sell.

He remains working at the orphanage but with the extra money he had left over he bought two motorbikes.

He says:

“We have bike business being popular here in Kenya and so we have a lot of young people getting PSV licenses to ride motorcycles. It is like a taxi, you park it somewhere where we have a lot of people or near a villa where people come in and out and then you ride them to the bus stop so am not the one riding it and I don't have a PSV license but I have employed a young dude to do it for me. He can make around 500 or 600 a day but he has to fuel it, give me my 200 at the end of the day and he keeps the balance for himself, so if he makes more then he gets more as long as I get mine.”

So that’s a big help for him potential bringing him in 6,000 a month which helps for his rent of 10,000 per month

Again thanks for your support. Its helped Stan, his Family and now apparently given two other young guys employment.
