Help Steve Fight for His Life: A Journey of Hope and Courage
Auckland
Dear friends, family, and kind-hearted strangers, we are writing to you with a heavy heart but also a powerful sense of hope. 19 months ago, we received a call from mum that shook our world, "your brother has been told he could have only 3 weeks to live." That moment changed everything for our brother Steve and his family, but Steve refused to be defined by his devastating diagnosis. Steve was diagnosed with a rare cancer, cholangiocarcinoma. He fights with everything he has, showing us the strength, courage, and love that defines him.
Steve is a brother, son, husband, friend, and a devoted father to 3 beautiful kids. He’s fighting to be in their future, for the moments he still has to watch them grow, guide, and be there for them. He will do anything to keep being their dad. That’s why he’s already leapt into medical trials, left his beautiful home in the Cooks for NZ and now Australia, even though this has come with a heavy financial burden, side effects and no promises of a cure.
Now we’ve come to another critical point in the journey. There's hope, but it lies in a newly approved treatment program, Histotripsy, in the United States. This treatment has been running for 2 years and has shown incredible success in helping patients like Steve. It's his best chance to kill the tumors and give him more time with his kids, wife, family, and time to live the life he’s been fighting so hard for.
Steve is committed to beating this disease and we believe he can do it.
Steve is our big brother. He is a dedicated father, and friend to many. Our nieces & nephew, who is just 9, deserves to have their dad in their lives as long as they can. Steve always steps up when needed, and now is our chance to step up for him.
This treatment comes at a significant cost—medical bills, travel, and ongoing care—but we believe in its power to keep Steve with us. If we don't raise the full amount, we will continue to fundraise and save until we have enough for the procedure.
An update from Steve: a massive thanks and successful treatment 24 April 2025
We are in Oroville, California and had the Histotripsy procedure yesterday (19 April). All went very well, it took about 4 hours and the Dr managed to liquify 6 tumors. The rest are too small and we’ll be attacking them with chemo starting next week. This is a fantastic outcome and we are more than pleased with the result.
A massive thanks to all those that helped us to get here. I have been so overwhelmed by the generous support from the community and friends. To Nan Thompson and the cardio combat crew, Boogz Pita and friends, Steve Gillett and Glenn Palmer, Adam Hurdley and family for the fundraising you all arranged and to everyone that donated through the give a little page, a massive thank you as well. A special thanks to my Mum, my Dad and my sisters who have been incredible support through all of this, always being there when we need them and stepping up when I don’t have the energy.
Onwards.
