Raising funds so my dad Stu can get life saving CAR T-cell therapy treatment that isn’t available in New Zealand.
Waikato
In 2018 our Dad Stu Lye, was diagnosed with a high-risk form of Multiple Myeloma with a prognosis of 3-5 years. Bravely he has endured ongoing and debilitating treatments including 3 stem cell transplants, in what has been a most valiant fight for his life. Unfortunately, he has now exhausted all forms of treatment in NZ. Thankfully he has an opportunity to travel to China for 3 months to undergo a life changing treatment, CAR T-cell. Clinical trials show CAR T-cell therapy to be highly effective for patients whose disease had relapsed after or not responded to multiple prior treatments. This therapy involves collecting the patient's T cells and genetically modifying them to attack the cancer cells only.
For 14 years Stu served with the NZ Police and was honoured with Policeman of the Year in 2011. 10 years ago, we lost our mum to a brain tumour after a tough fight. Stu is not ready to give up and still has a lot to give and live for especially as he is only 55 years old. He has since remarried and we are now a family of 8, plus a granddaughter and another on the way. We want Dad to continue to enjoy adventures and life’s journey with his wife (Prue) and watch his children, step children and grandchildren grow up around him for many more years to come.
Sadly, Stu has not been able to work since his diagnosis and without the support of others this opportunity will not be achievable due to the high cost of around $150,0000.
Stu is my incredible dad.
Flights, all medical treatments and living costs occurred at the hospital. Accommodation for his wife who will be supporting him. All money raised will go towards Stu’s ongoing treatments and living costs.
Update 12 May 2025
Just a note to let you know that the money you donated to me to assist in life saving car-t treatment is now coming to fruition.
Recently my blood cancer has decided to rear its head again and fortunately for me and your help we are able to travel to China and receive treatment. Without this opportunity things would be grim so I just wanted to say again how much my family and I appreciate your generous support.
Warmest regards,
Stu
