Help support Allan on his road to recovery after he suffered a haemorrhagic stroke at only 45 years old.
Glen Eden, Auckland
Allan was a talented chef at a local hospital and admired for his scrumptious creations. Gentle and generous, he had a way of quietly helping when he was most needed. A sparkling humour and cheeky smile made him a joy.
In October 2022 his life almost ended. Just 45, Allan suffered a haemorrhagic stroke and spent a week in a coma in the ICU.
After four months of recovery in Auckland Hospital, Allan went to a nursing home where he’s learning to walk, battling partial paralysis and learning to use a wheelchair. The doctors praise Allan's physical progress, but his short-term memory loss drastically interferes with his recovery.
A hole in his skull alleviates the swelling of the brain so he wears a helmet for protection.
He retains his humour and quick wit — his mother, Allana, 72, asked what he had for breakfast one day and he said with an impish smile, "Your guess is as good as mine."
His family and friends visit constantly. The short-term goal is for him to return to the house he bought with Allana but that will take six months or more.
Allan can no longer help pay the mortgage, and with the cost of full-time care, keeping the house has become a serious challenge — and he still needs dental work for intubation damage. We’re hoping for donations up to $17,000 or more to alleviate the financial stress.
Allana, Pamela and Valerie, Allan’s mother and sisters, want to thank all those who support them and especially the medical professionals who have brought Allan so far already.
I am Ann Treadgold Allan's aunty.
The funds raised will be used to cover Allan's nursing home fees, mortgage payments and dental treatment.
An update on Allan's road to recovery. 9 May 2023
The first thing I would like to say is thank you, thank you, thank you. We are seriously blown away by everyone’s loving support and generosity. You are all making it possible for Allan to have the best possible care and relieve some of the stress faced by the family.
Allan's progress is slow but steady. His walking is much improved, using a walking frame, but the strength in his left arm is not sufficient to push his wheelchair, he needs quite a lot more Occupational Therapy. Keeping a diary of his days activities is helping to rebuild his short-term memory. The Care Home is looking after him really well and the staff really enjoy his company.
He is looking forward to coming home and has visited three times, so far, using Wheelchair Transport. Allan’s favourite time of the day is when family and friends visit. If they come bearing chocolate, even better😊
Allan still faces a further operation in the future to replace the bone flap that was removed to relieve the swelling of his brain. This operation is quite a challenging one and will mean another stay in hospital while he recovers. Typically, the bone flap is not replaced until 6 months to a year after the initial haemorrhage. It is now 6 months since his stroke, and he has an appointment in two weeks to see the neurosurgeon. Fingers crossed.
Because Allan's difficulties were as a result of an illness and not an accident the amount of support, he receives is vastly different. If his head injury was as a result of an accident the financial support wouldn't be the problem that it is now.
The legal situation, including organising a power of attorney and mortgage arrangements is time consuming but there is a little bit of progress. The mortgage is due to be refixed in July and Allana doesn’t even want to think about how much they will be paying after that. However, there is hope for the future and your donations have helped to give the family time to make plans.
Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Thank you so much for your generous donation.
