Help support Amelia as she recovers from brain surgery.

Raising funds to help support Amelia, Mark and Alexis as she begins a long, slow recovery from surgery.

Thornbury, Southland

After years of quietly suffering from debilitating migraines, Amelia underwent surgery in January for a 14mm brain herniation called Chiari Decompression. This surgery went well and Mark took leave to support her during this operation and recovery time.

Unfortunately three weeks later Amelia suffered a CSF leak which is the fluid around the brain and spinal cord. Amelia was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital where she spent eight days in ICU. After this Amelia developed Bacterial Meningitis which resulted in a continuous IV of heavy antibiotics, and another 7 days in the ward.

Amelia is relieved to be back at home, however she is now waiting to see if she will need further surgery to place a shunt in her head. Having been off work for eight weeks, Mark is taking unpaid leave to care for Amelia as she begins a long, slow recovery over the following months.

Use of funds

Money will be spent on general living expenses, such as mortgage repayments, petrol, groceries and usual family expenses. This will allow Mark to remain home caring for Amelia and to relieve financial pressure once Mark is able to return to work.

Settling in back at home   12 April 2023

Posted by: Amelia Petersen

Thank you all so very much for your support and kindness. We have been home for a few weeks and life is starting to settle back down. The cats are happy..

Recovery is slow but each week I can do a little more and have to remind myself it's okay to have a crap day. I have an MRI scan coming up to check on my head but overall minimal pain.

Except now I've now broken my foot....oh gosh!! 💔

So I won't be doing much. We were told it was a sprain and a week later get a phone call saying its broken. So in to kew to get this sorted in a few days time.

Health is stable and Mark has been back at work for a week now so starting to have some normality.

This page will close in a few weeks time, We truly feel that we have been supported in so many ways by so many wonderful people and will be able to get back on our feet. Your kindness and support have been incredible and we appreciate it so much. Thanks
