Young ladies who left Gloriavale say they were exploited and were working in conditions akin to modern-day slavery? The court will decide.
Nationwide
In August 2022 six women who left Gloriavale (including me) went to court saying we were exploited and abused, working in conditions akin to modern-day slavery. The legal team representing the women plaintiffs has just reassembled for the recommencement of the trial. There's another 6 weeks to go!
We have reached a critical point in this long-running case.
“We are back here to finish the job,” says Brian Henry, lead Barrister for the Plaintiffs.
The Plaintiffs cannot afford to pay expenses associated with the case, however the legal team is committed to finishing the job. Lawyer Dennis Gates said, “We can’t walk away from this. It is just unbelievable that these women have been left to suffer for so long. This is New Zealand, a first-world country; it’s unbelievable.”
The 2022 Courage case, where three young men took Gloriavale to court and won, was about child labour and being employees. This case is about women in servitude, slavery & enslavement.
For decades, young girls have worked early mornings (3-4am) and very long days. They have had no rights; they just existed and worked hard. How is this able to happen in NZ?
Gloriavale reported they had $45million in assets incl $7 million in cash (Charities Commission 2022) but they have fired their lawyers because they say they can’t afford them.
The hearing resumes 9:30am on Monday 13th Feb in Christchurch.
Please help us to hold to account those who have taken advantage of vulnerable women. You can make a difference. Thank you.

I am one of the plaintiffs and am raising funds on behalf of the whole team. Many of my family and friends are involved in this court case.
Funds will be used for the associated costs of fighting for justice. There is a lot of travel, accommodation, counselling, babysitting & food costs for the large number of supporters, advocates and plaintiffs.
Many thanks! 16 March 2023
