Raising money to support Marks Cancer journey with the help of friends and family.
Auckland
At 30 years old, Mark was planning for his future, much loved by his partner Kiana, his parents and siblings, two nieces, a nephew, wider whanau and an amazing group of friends.
Mark loved playing basketball and sharing his knowledge of nutrition. He was ready to kick his plans for the future into gear.
Then in September 2020, having just celebrated his 30th birthday, Mark was given the shattering news that he had a cancerous tumor. Having rare cancer in an inoperable place was difficult to comprehend, but after completing chemotherapy and radiation, he beat the odds and was told there was no sign of cancer in the original site.
After a week of further testing, this showed the cancer had metastasized to multiple bone locations requiring more radiation and surgery to keep him active, which is very important to him. The day before surgery Mark was rushed to hospital with life threatening pneumonia, which delayed the surgery and led to blood clots post surgery, now requiring an injection daily to manage.
Mark is currently undergoing further radiation on his spine and chest so that he can continue his fight. He has overcome some major challenges, but each week brings new hurdles.
Mark is not ready to give up and at times like this it is difficult to know what to do. Mark is fiercely independent so we want to do this for him.
We are looking to help Mark with some breathing space so that he can spend his time and energy loving his family and friends and fighting this awful cancer. After many sincere offers of help but not really knowing what we could do, we've set this page up for donations to help Mark keep fighting this battle and to continue to try and live his life to the fullest.
Mark and I are childhood friends and hes like a brother to me. I will do anything to support him through this journey.
We want to help with the significant costs involved in treatments, unfunded medication Lenvatinib and day to day living costs to make this time a little easier.
From Jess De Leeuw on behalf of family 15 November 2021
It is with a heavy heart we would like to let everyone know Mark lost his battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at home on Thursday. Mark and Kiana made the brave decision to come home from Hospice and spend his final days surrounded by his immediate family, partner, best friend and fur babies. We are all so grateful for these now precious memories of love and laughter.
Due to Covid, Mark's memorial service will be postponed until the traffic light system kicks in and we can have a proper send off. At this stage we are aiming for the 11th of December, confirmation and further details will be shared closer to the time.
Rest in Love
