Please help support Penelope and her family at this difficult time
Southland
Penelope is a beautiful 15 month old Southland girl, who is currently in Starship hospital. Last week Penelope was struck down by a rare bacterial infection. She had a rapid deterioration and was rushed to hospital on 29th January then transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland on 1st February. She continues to be cared for in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit. Penelope is a strong determined little girl, but she does face a long road to recovery.
This has been an incredibly tough and emotional time for her parents, Henrietta and Bill as they focus on what matters most – being by her side and supporting her through her treatment and recovery. Her family will be based at the Ronald McDonald House at Starship for the foreseeable future.
This page has been set up to help ease some of the financial pressure so her family can be fully present for Penelope. Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly towards supporting Penelope and her family during this challenging time. Penelope also has a 3 month old baby brother- Arthur at home. Being separated as a family during this time has been especially hard. These funds will help support bringing the family together as much as possible so they can be there for each other while Penelope receives the care she needs. If you’re unable to donate, even sharing this page means the world.
Thank you for your kindness and support 💛

🌟Miracles do happen 🌟 16 April 2026
Back In January, Penelope suffered a seizure at home and was rushed to Invercargill Hospital. As her condition significantly worsened, she was flown to Starship in Auckland and on arrival was given a 48 hour window to survive. She then spent 4 weeks in an induced coma.
She was diagnosed with a severe ecoli infection- Shigella that she most likely contracted by ingesting cow poo. This led to significant complications which created another illness called HUS affecting her organs, with her kidneys, heart, lungs, and brain worst affected.
After weeks of intensive care on dialysis and ventilated, Penelope slowly began to wake. The medical team were unsure how she would be with her brain damage and she has had to relearn all basic skills, but has made incredible progress—regaining her sight, starting to walk again and her determined and sassy personality is shining through.
We spent time back in Invercargill Hospital focusing on her recovery, and last week we were finally discharged and able to bring her home! Penelope continues to amaze everyone with her strength and progress—she truly is a little miracle. We were told this is an extremely rare illness with only 7 other comparable cases in NZ history.
We are so grateful for all the support, prayers, and love shown to our family during this incredibly difficult time. A huge thank you as well for the incredibly generous donations—these will go a long way in supporting Penelope’s ongoing health needs and recovery.
