Help Te Puna Reo o Ngā Kākano Move Whare

$16,675 of $20,000 goal
Given by 185 generous donors in 5 weeks

Te Puna Reo o Ngā Kākano is getting earthquake strengthened and we have to move - we need your help getting into our new whare.

Pipitea, Wellington

Beginning in early June, our home on Thorndon Quay for the last 16 years will need to be closed for earthquake strengthening for at least four months, possibly longer. Despite the odds, we’ve found a new home for while the earthquake strengthening mahi is completed.

As a not-for-profit, whānau-led centre, we need to raise funds to cover costs for:

- packing up and moving to a new whare

- storing furniture and resources

- getting our new whare ready for our kaiako and tamariki

Puna Reo is the only Māori medium early childhood education centre in central Wellington and has provided countless whānau a safe space to support one another and raise tamariki together with te reo, ōna tikanga and te ao Māori as central tenets of their lives. The wider Puna whānau are invested in keeping the kaupapa alive and we need your help.

Whakatipuria te kākano, kia pihi, kia puāwai! - Nurture the seed to flourish and bloom!

About us

A kaiako led, whānau governed and supported, not for profit childcare service operating through the Te Puna Reo o Ngā Kākano Charitable Trust. Our vision is, “Whakatipuria te kākano kia pihi, kia puāwai” (Nurture the seed to flourish & bloom).

Use of funds

We're going to need some money to dismantle, pack up, shift and store some of our stuff.

If there's any putea left over we'll be able to get some new supplies and resources for the tamariki to use in their new space.

Not long to go!  26 May 2024

It’s been a real rollercoaster over the last few weeks BUT thanks to the kindness of a centre in Brooklyn we’re going to be joining their whānau in their whare for the coming months while our whare gets strengthened. We are super grateful and stoked to have a real solution.

A huge number of our whānau are taking this adventure as well as our amazing kaiako. We’re counting down our final days in our current whare and work is well underway to get our tamariki and kaimahi packed and ready to go ahead of our temporary shift.

Boxes are being packed, furniture has been measured and catalogued, forms are getting filled in and plans are being developed for how our two whānau will become united.

A massive thank you goes out to all of you who have donated to the page already. Every dollar will help us cover the moving costs; boxes and packaging, moving vehicles and labour, and the rental of a storage facility for all our belongings, a few are in the photo, while we are in Brooklyn.

Your generosity is truly appreciated.
