Raising funds for a TNR (trap, neuter, release) clinic and free sterilisations for the village cats of Lake Toba, North Sumatra, Indonesia.
Auckland
The cats of Lake Toba need your help, starting with the gorgeous tourist village of Tuk Tuk, where the cat population has become unmanageable.
The nearest veterinary clinic is hours away, and sterilisation or veterinary care is out of reach for many local people.
Homes are full of cats that breed cycle after cycle with no respite. Out of options, reluctant owners often dump kittens on the street, where they struggle to survive with the hundreds of other homeless cats.
The best way to help the cats of Lake Toba is with a Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) Program, and that’s just what Toba Animal Friends (TAF) is about to undertake.
This local charity already singlehandedly cares for dozens of cats and dogs in their shelter, as well as supporting local rescuers and providing medical care to animals in need. To make a sustainable difference here in Lake Toba, they need to start getting the cat population under control.
This is the first step. Exploring Sumatra (a travel blog and YouTube channel focused on Sumatra) is helping raise funds for Toba Animal Friends to provide a free spay and neuter program for cats in Tuk Tuk – hopefully, the first of many.
The program will offer free cat (or dog )spaying and neutering for anyone who wants it. The TAF team will also capture and sterilise as many street cats as can be humanely caught and released.
Cost of procedures:
Female cats: 350,000 IDR/$38 NZD
Male cats: 175,000 IDR/$19 NZD
Female dogs: 750,000 IDR/$81 NZD
Male dogs: 550,000 IDR/ $60 NZD
Living in Tuk Tuk ourselves, we have rescued six cats in a short time and developed a close relationship with TAF. We are supporting their animal rescue and welfare efforts by helping them raise funds to keep doing their vital work in Sumatra.
Expenses for the veterinary team while in Lake Toba. Sterilisations and medical care for the cats and dogs. Any excess will remain with Toba Animal Friends to continue funding their rescue centre and future TNR clinics.
