Douglas (blind athlete) and his two guides are running the NY marathon, please help us get there!
Christchurch, Canterbury
Douglas is a 75 year old VI (visually impaired) athlete who is completely blind in one eye and has 5% visibility in the other which is rapidly deteriorating. Not only has Douglas previously run over 60 half marathons, but he is now determined to take on the New York marathon despite his physical disadvantage (his doctor has advised that he will likely be 100% blind by race day).
To assist him through this monumental effort, Brittany and Rosie have volunteered to train with Douglas through Achilles NZ and guide him through the marathon race itself in New York this coming November.
Running a full marathon is more than incredible for someone at Douglas' age alone therefore running 42.2km, being 95-100% blind and running alongside over 50,000 other participants is absolutely astonishing.
Any contribution would be greatly appreciated to help fund this once in a lifetime experience for Douglas!
Donations will be going towards cost of flights to New York as well as excess accommodation costs.
Many thanks! 1 October 2023
