Bob's Cove is currently under threat from an intensive commercial visitor accommodation - help us prevent this!
Mount Creighton, Otago
Classed as an area of Wahi Tupuna, Bob’s Cove is a jewel in the Wakatipu Basin and under threat from an intensive commercial visitor accommodation by B Property Group (area circled orange). This proposal could set a precedent for the adjoining vacant sections (area circled white not owned by B Property Group).
We, along with QLDC staff at the time, opposed the application for a visitor accommodation complex that proposed 33 buildings. Based on the evidence presented at the hearing the Independent Commissioners declined the Resource Consent application. B Property Group appealed the decision and with agreement unable to be reached during mediation the case now heads to the Environment Court in April 2024. Council has now indicated they will support the slightly amended proposal - however the amended proposal has not addressed our concerns about the scale, intensity & suitability of visitor accommodation in Bob's Cove. This information isn’t widely known and there is a risk of losing what is unique about this special place.
We are not opposed to the development of four residences on the land as is allowed under the District Plan but we are opposed to intensive commercial visitor accommodation in this outstanding rural residential zone.
We hope you share our concerns and objectives and are able to help us raise the funds to challenge the proposed development in the Environment Court. Surplus funds will be used for pest control. We are a group of locals - Your support is gratefully appreciated!
The BOB’s COVE - PUNATAPU COMMUNITY TRUST aims to protect and preserve the outstanding natural landscape and ecological biodiversity of Bob’s Cove-Punatapu by working closely with existing conservation groups, local council and the wider Bob’s Cove community. Our charity is made up of long-term local residents with strong community connections & you can give with confidence.
We estimate the following costs for the Environment Court:
~ $39k for legal fees
~ $21k for a landscape architect
~ $23k for a resource management planner
~ $11k for an ecologist
Total: $94,000
