Join us in taking a stand to protect 'Our rare, valuable soils and fight for NZs food future' and help fund the Environment Court appeal.
Lincoln, Canterbury
Selwyn District Council’s (SDC) decision to rezone 190ha of rural land for a 1,700 home subdivision has dire implications for Lincoln and NZ. Lincoln will rapidly double in size without vital supporting infrastructure, and more importantly permanent loss of some of NZ's scarce highly productive land (HPL) to grow food now and for the future.
Founded in 1878, Lincoln University is the oldest agricultural university in the Southern Hemisphere. Today it is at the heart of one of the largest precincts of land based business and research organisations in the Southern Hemisphere - home to world leading land and food researchers, academics & Agri-Businesses.
Why Lincoln for this world-class precinct? It sits amongst some of NZ's best HPL– a nationally important food bowl. We must fight to protect this precious soil resource across NZ.
For over 2 years councils have been inundated with unplanned rezoning requests, including on highly productive soils. In many cases they have felt compelled to approve. This Environment Court appeal will be a test case for all NZ.
Without carefully planned development with a long-term view of social and environmental impacts, how will we feed the future and have thriving communities? You can help ensure NZ remains a great place to live, save irreplaceable soils that support vital agricultural activity, food production, and leave a legacy for future generations.

Legal advice suggests we have grounds for appeal - all funds go towards legal/expert fees. Indications of $7k to prepare & lodge the appeal, cost estimates up to $150K for the full case (any excess funds will be applied to future projects)
Update - Withdrawal of appeal against PC69 16 April 2024
It is with some sadness that we update the situation with our appeal against PC69. With Selwyn District Council (SDC) deciding to rezone the land for PC69 themselves, and the new Government opening up fast tracking of greenfield consents, we had to make the decision to withdraw our appeal against the PC69 development. We were led to believe that an appeal was possible, and should we have been able to have a fair hearing in the Environment Court we would have had a strong case, but sadly that is not to be. We would like to sincerely thank all of our supporters, lawyers, resource planners, and soil scientists who have given their time to help get this campaign as far as it did. Our collective action did help to get the National Policy Statement - Highly Productive Land across the line and has helped others to protect highly productive, food producing land which should remain a priority.
Many thanks & best wishes, Lincoln Voice Inc.
