The environment court hearing has now finished. Thanks to your generous donations on this Give-a-little page, we were able to employ a ‘dream team’ of professional experts including Robert Enright (barrister), Robert Scott (planner), Di Lucas (landscape architect) and Megan Graeme (ecologist). As leaders in their respective fields, we felt like we were in very capable hands. We also had an impressive team of lay witnesses – Phil Keoghan, international TV star, Luke Reilly, of local business Luke’s kitchen, Wanda Briljevich for Ngāti Huarere ki Whangapoua, Grahame Christian, manawhenua and local supporter and former MP Catherine Delahunty, spokesperson for Preserve New Chum Inc. Together, our experts and lay witnesses presented compelling arguments as to why development would be inappropriate and that the beach should be conserved and protected for future generations.
What now?
Negotiations are underway with the owners of the land behind the beach, the Thames Coromandel District Council and other interested parties including Preserve New Chum Inc. The applicants have been offered the chance to modify parts of their original submission to address concerns raised during the hearing. We have presented counter-arguments to some of these points. Now we all await the decision of the commissioners, expected in June/July.
Finances
Thanks to generous donations via Give-a-little, fundraising and two successful grants from the NZ Environmental Legal Assistance Fund (the ELA), we were able to cover $76,000 of costs. However, the court hearing has emptied our coffers and we do need more money for further legal assistance. If you would like to continue supporting us financially, you can do so via this page until the end of June. Thereafter, you can go to our main Give-a-little page which you'll find by searching "New Chum".
Thank you
As always, thank you so much for your ongoing support. As our team sat in the court room in early April, we were all very aware that we were representing you, the thousands of passionate supporters of New Chum beach.
