Rob made it, we’re finally home!

A little while ago we snuck home & are settling into our new routines, slowly catching up with friends & enjoying all the normal things we missed so much. You really don’t realise how lovely normal is, until normal is taken away.

Rob was discharged from rehab sooner than anticipated, thanks to his drive & determination to get better! He’s now fully mobile & has had that burger he was looking forward to, although he’s since revealed he’s lost his sense of taste! He’s been enjoying hitting the gym again, we’ve been fishing, for lots of walks & just hanging out together.

Rob’s goals now are to get fit & strong again, being able to drive, getting back to work, relearning how to read, & to go diving. We are so excited to spend lots of time at the beach with the kids, a family holiday & lots of fishing!

From Rob…Thank you all so much. It’s been so incredible what you’ve done for me, & for my family. Lysh sometimes reads me some of the messages you’ve put on this page, thank you all so much, I’m amazed & feel lucky to have so much support.

It’s been great to see your familiar faces around. Sorry if I can’t remember your name, I’m working on it but my memory is pretty bad!

I’m loving being back with my family, every day feels like a win.

Thank you all, this means the world to me.

The road we’re on is still long, and sometimes hard & frustrating. But together, with all of you in our corner, we’ll get there 💪

Love Rob, Lysh, Finn & Frankie

Thank you all so much for your incredible generosity, again! We can’t believe it & are so thankful for the support. I’ve told Rob about Givealittle & have been reading him the messages. He’s absolutely blown away & said “I can’t believe how many people want to help us”. So thank you! It’s taken a huge weight off our shoulders & your words of encouragement are a real boost for us.

Rob’s been making some epic progress & we’re feeling hopeful for the future. Things that seemed impossible are now possible, thanks to his incredible determination & rehab team!

Since our last update, Rob’s had a cranioplasty to replace the piece of skull that was removed initially. After some complications & a second surgery he recovered well & has been steadily improving since.

His walking is getting stronger. He still needs assistance & is battling some pain but he’s determined to get moving!

After being unable to eat for 4 months he’s enjoying food again & is excited for his first burger!

His voice is getting stronger & it’s been amazing to have conversations with him after not knowing whether he would ever speak again. He has aphasia so his language is a bit jumbled, but we hope this will improve over time.

He’s lost his sight in one eye & unfortunately this is permanent. This news took the wind out of his sails, but it won’t stop him doing any of the things he loves!

He’s lost lots of important memories, but we hope they will slowly return.

Thank you all, we feel your support every day!

What an inspiration you are Rob. Well done and great to be informed of your progress.

  • An update on Rob's progress

      21 April 2023

    Hi everyone.

We have continued to be so overwhelmed with all the love we’ve received since giving our update on Rob in March.

At the time of that update, Rob was being weaned off his ventilator, this thankfully went as planned & he began breathing on his own. After almost 3 weeks in Critical Care he was moved into the Neurosurgery ward, and showed improvements that made us all even more hopeful than we were before.

In mid April, Rob was able to move out of hospital to a rehabilitation centre. We are so ready for this next chapter, as is Rob. He is showing such amazing signs of courage, perseverance and persistence. An eyebrow raise to show he acknowledges us, or a thumbs up, the smallest of actions that now have the biggest impact.

The team he gets to work with in rehab is the most brilliant group of people and we are excited to see what the next days, weeks and months look like for Rob and his recovery.

This will continue to be a long road to recovery for Rob and our family, but with the support of our loved ones, friends and beautiful people we’ve met along the way, as well as Rob’s determined & disciplined nature, we know that he can come out on top of this.

      13 March 2023

We cannot thank you all enough for the love, support, donations, words of strength, food, hugs, housework, messages, and for keeping Rob & us in your thoughts. We’ve been so overwhelmed with all the kindness sent our way, from family, friends, and strangers, and for our village rallying around us. It’s been a bright light in our time of absolute darkness, and there are no words that could ever express how much gratitude we feel. Rob will be so relieved to know his family are being taken care of, I can’t wait until I can tell him of all the wonderful things that have happened, and how loved and adored he is by so many.

Since coming off sedation last week, Rob has made some little steps of progress, enough to give us so much hope. To see a foot move, a finger twitch, or an eye open - little things we took for granted before, now mean everything to us.

At the moment he is being slowly weaned off his ventilator, and once he can breathe on his own he will be able to move from the critical care unit and into the neuro ward for more specialised care.

It’s a long and uncertain road ahead, but if anyone can do this, our big beautiful Rob can! And I’m sure he can feel all the strength being sent his way.

    Thank you all endlessly ❤️

Love, Elysha & all of Rob's family
