Help us take Gloriavale to the Employment Court

My nephew and other ex-GV members are taking Gloriavale to court over alleged worker exploitation. They are taking this action on behalf of the many people who have left Gloriavale empty-handed after years of abuse, trauma and modern-day slavery.

Winning the case means Gloriavale workers would no longer allowed to be considered “volunteers”, and things like rigorous health and safety protocols, underage employment standards and annual leave would be mandatory where they currently aren’t.

Us boys joined the “work force” in Gloriavale at 8 or 9 years old in the moss business, standing at racks in the swamps in all weather cleaning moss and getting yelled at. Kids working at heights, no barriers, improper training and minimal supervision.

Working is not a choice. It is not a volunteer position. No one gets paid.

The volunteer concept is just legal jargon Gloriavale uses it doesn’t capture the reality of what’s happening and the whole organisation. Everyone knows the way to control people is to control the money & the economy.

The leaders always say everything is a choice – marriage, job, you name it. But it’s not true. It’s a lie. Everyone who has lived there knows it’s a lie. The people who live there know it’s a lie. The public knows it’s a lie.

It’s time the truth is told.
