Help us to continue our mission of restoration and protection by detecting & eliminating mice.
Rawhitiroa, Taranaki
Rodents are on the move as the weather cools, increasing the risk of mice sneaking into the sanctuary. In April mouse prints were detected in the north of the sanctuary. While we have had occasional invaders near the carpark, this time we have a bigger problem on our hands, with mouse prints being found in the forest for the first time since the major mouse invasion in 2016. Response actions were deployed immediately to find and remove these mice from the sanctuary.
Finding a mouse within a 230ha forest is a tricky task. One of our key detection tools are inked tracking cards, baited with food to attract animals onto the ink, leaving their footprints as they leave, letting us see who is living where. Once detected we can target trapping around places prints are found for a more successful outcome.
A huge amount of effort has already gone into this initial response. We are grateful for the support of our volunteers, other conservation groups, and our community in delivering this hard but important work. While detections are decreasing, there are weeks of trapping and monitoring ahead to get us back to zero mice.
Your donation will help cover response costs including tracking cards, pest detection dogs, bait, and traps. Each cards costs $1.76, and we will need over 2000, in the next three weeks alone!
Mice can have a big impact on vulnerable native species and damage the health of our forests. We’re determined to rid Rotokare of mice once again.
Thanks for your support.
We are a community-led, award winning, conservation-based charitable trust in Taranaki. As kaitiaki our mission is to achieve the highest level of restoration, protection, and enhancement of Rotokare's indigenous ecosystem.
All donations will pay for mouse response actions;
$10 buys 5 tracking cards
$25 buys 14 tracking cards
$30 buys 4kg of peanut butter bait
$60 buys 12 traps
$500 covers the cost of a trained rodent detection dog and their handler for 1 day
No mice detected since July 10. 21 August 2024
There have been 0 mice caught over the past month! The first time since February of this year. Our recent extended high risk tracking card run (including response areas and any sites where there have been detections over the last few months) has also come back clear with no pest prints being detected! Last catch/detection was on July 10th. Response trapping remains in place in some places. These will stay active for a minimum of 6 weeks following the most recent detection in each area. While we’re not quite out of the woods yet it’s looking likely that we have successfully gotten on top of our mousey invaders!
A huge thank you to our awesome staff and volunteer team, to TKT and several corporate working bee groups. There were certainly times when this felt daunting/impossible, but our collective consistent efforts over the past 4 months have helped to bring Rotokare back to mouse free status, which is a significant achievement!
A huge thank you also to everyone who donated funds to help with this huge mop up operation. We really do appreciate your support.
Thank you so much Carla. We are deploying a whole sanctuary tracking card run this week (1200 cards), so hope to see that our efforts on elimination have worked.
Thank you for thinking of us with your kind donation.
It is a privilege to work to restore our native heritage. Thank you for your support to help us do that.
Thank you for your generous donation. We are totally committed to our mission of ecological restoration. Thanks for being part of the journey.
