Help Vanessa get life-saving treatment

As you can see from this page’s updates, Vanessa’s health has been dramatically and steadily improving (although there's a long road ahead) since being administered the first dose of eculizumab on February 5. So much that doctors are confident she can fly to Spain by the end of March.

When creating the campaign, I requested funds to pay for 3 months' treatment, based on her doctor's NPPA request to get funds for 4 months’ treatment, which was rejected.

She then needed money to pay for the treatment. The first month was covered by Vanessa’s savings, but she needed your help to pay for the remaining three months.

She's improved so much that, if there are no unexpected situations, Vanessa will not need the whole amount raised in this campaign to fund her treatment in New Zealand until she's healthy enough to travel to Spain.

Vanessa will use part of the money raised in this campaign to:

* Pay for receiving eculizumab in New Zealand during the month of March, and related medical costs. Only the first two doses of eculizumab were administered in a public hospital. The remaining 4 to 5 (and possibly 6) doses are being administered in a private hospital. This hospital charges an additional NZD 2400 fee for associated consultations and treatments every time she receives an eculizumab transfusion.

* Pay for the costs of Brexsero meningitis vaccines, and related GP consultation and vaccine administration fees.

Pay for the dental costs incurred by her acute 3-day history of progressive vomiting.

* Pay for the travel costs to Spain and, if needed, receive emergency treatment during two stopovers on the way to Spain. Overall, it’s about 24 hours’ flight time, and it takes at least 3 flights to make it to her hometown. Total travel duration is 35 hours approx. If there are delays or flying-related complications, it can mean that she needs to receive emergency hemodialysis/eculizumab treatment or any emergency services requiring treatment of her pulmonary oedema and myocarditis caused by her illness. Hopefully this will not happen.

She can face planned and emergency medical expenses thanks to your generous contributions, which kept coming in since day one of this funding campaign.

As per the Giving a Little’s terms and conditions, she will receive the raised funds in full by March 20-25. Once she is safe and settled in Spain, she will donate any unused funds to Kidney Health New Zealand and Rare Disorders New Zealand.

This will mean that part of your money will go to the original cause you donated it for, and the remaining part will help others in New Zealand with kidney and rare diseases.

I will post an update on this page with the exact details when this donation takes place.

She will also continue to advocate for Australia and New Zealand and join the aHUS Alliance to participate in their Global Action campaign. Vanessa has been extremely fortunate to receive an overwhelming outpouring of support and she believes that helping others in similar situations is the best way to honour your original intent.

Como podéis ver en las actualizaciones de esta página, el estado de salud de Vane está mejorando radicalmente y de forma constante (aunque queda mucho por andar) desde que se le administró la primera dosis de eculizumab el 5 de febrero. Tanto es así que los médicos confían en que podrá volar a España a finales de marzo.

Al crear la campaña, solicité fondos para pagar 3 meses de tratamiento, basándome en la petición de financiación de 4 meses de tratamiento que hizo su médico a la agencia farmacéutica de Nueva Zelanda. Esta petición fue denegada.

El primer mes estaba cubierto por los ahorros de Vanessa, pero necesitaba vuestra ayuda para pagar los tres meses restantes.

Vane ha mejorado tanto que, si no hay imprevistos, no necesitará toda la cantidad recaudada en esta campaña para financiar el tratamiento en Nueva Zelanda hasta que pueda estar lo suficientemente sana para viajar a España.

Vane utilizará parte del dinero recaudado en esta campaña para lo siguiente:

* Pagar por recibir el tratamiento de eculizumab en Nueva Zelanda durante el mes de marzo, y los gastos médicos relacionados. Solamente las dos primeras dosis de eculizumab le fueron administradas en un hospital público. Las 4 o 5 (y posiblemente 6) dosis restantes se administran en un hospital privado. Este hospital cobra 2400 NZD adicionales por consultas y tratamientos asociados cada vez que recibe una transfusión de eculizumab.

* Pagar los costes de las vacunas contra la meningitis Brexsero, y los costes asociados de las consultas médicas y administración de la vacuna.

* Pagar los gastos odontológicos ocasionados por su historial agudo de 3 días de vómitos progresivos.

* Pagar los gastos de viaje a España y, en caso necesario, recibir tratamiento de urgencia durante dos escalas en el camino a España. En total, son unas 24 horas de vuelo, y se necesitan al menos 3 vuelos para llegar a su ciudad natal. La duración total del viaje es de 35 horas aproximadamente. Si hay retrasos o complicaciones relacionadas con el vuelo, puede significar que tenga que recibir un tratamiento de urgencia de hemodiálisis/eculizumab o cualquier servicio de urgencia que requiera el tratamiento de su edema pulmonar y miocarditis causados por su enfermedad. Esperemos que esto no ocurra.

Vane podrá hacer frente a los gastos médicos planificados y de urgencia gracias a vuestras generosas aportaciones, que han seguido llegando desde el primer día de esta campaña de financiación.

Según los términos y condiciones de Giving a Little, recibirá la totalidad de los fondos recaudados entre el 20 y el 25 de marzo. Una vez que esté sana y salva e instalada en España, donará los fondos no utilizados a Kidney Health New Zealand y Rare Disorders New Zealand.

Haré una actualización en la plataforma con todos los detalles de la donación cuando la realice.

Ello quiere decir que parte de vuestro dinero irá a la causa original para la que lo donasteis, y la parte restante ayudará a otras personas en Nueva Zelanda con enfermedades renales y enfermedades raras.

Vane también continuará ayudando a difundir la situación en que se encuentran los enfermos de Australia y Nueva Zelanda y se unirá a la aHUS Alliance para participar en su campaña de acción global.

Vane ha tenido mucha suerte con la avalancha de apoyo que ha recibido, y cree que ayudar a otros en situaciones similares es la mejor manera de respetar vuestra intención original.
