Victoria has defied the odds to survive, but her journey is just beginning. She faces months of grueling physical therapy.
Mangatāwhiri
a-Mangatawhiri-mum-loses-leg-after-pneumonia-and-sepsis Victoria McHardy, a 36-year-old mother from Mangatāwhiri, underwent an above-the-knee amputation after an Influenza A infection escalated into severe pneumonia and sepsis.
Just weeks ago, Victoria McHardy was an active, healthy 36-year-old mother living in Mangatāwhiri with her husband, Cory and their young, children, Emily 12, Maia 10 and Ryan 8. In a matter of days, a standard bout of Influenza A took a catastrophic turn. Victoria developed severe pneumonia, which rapidly spiraled into septic shock. As her organs began to fail, doctors at Middlemore Hospital fought around the clock to save her life. She was placed in an induced coma on full life support. While the medical team successfully saved her life, the intense medication required to keep her vital organs functioning cut off blood circulation to her extremities. Tragically, this resulted in severe tissue damage, and doctors had no choice but to perform an above-the-knee amputation of her left leg. Acc may provide some support but this will be a lengthly process and not cover everything.
I am Mike, Victorias Dad
I would like to thank all of you for your generous donations and support for Victoria & the McHardy Family. The support she is receiving is a tremendous step in getting her home to her family and adjusting her new lifestyle.
Victoria is determined to get back on her feet for her children, but the financial toll of this tragedy is immense. We are raising funds to lift the financial burden of everyday expenses from Victoria and Cory so they can focus entirely on healing.
I'm Home with my kids and Cory at last 18 September 2026
After 9 weeks in hospital, I was discharged last Thursday to home. It's amazing to be back with my family, however its a huge adjustment that we are all working through and only the beginning of the next part of my journey.
I would like to express how grateful we all are, I am blown away by the generosity of family and all of our community friends and all you who have made a donation on give a little. This support means so much to us, and will help in renovating the bathroom and a ramp to the front door, to allow for life in a wheelchair while I wait for my leg to heal fully so we can begin the prosthetic process.
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, it takes a huge weight off and truly helps our family so much.
Sending love to you all.
