Fund raising to pay the estimated bill for Yuliya the alpaca to have a back tooth extracted that has caused a very painful abcess
Tinopai, Northland
Yuliya is a 5 year old female alpaca belonging to me who developed a large painful swelling under the eye on the left side of her face over the course of 2 days. On examination by the vet the mass was found to be very large, approximately the size of an apricot. A small hole was found in the mass, which was discharging pus. X-rays confirmed the abcess was caused by a rotten tooth and dental surgery is required so that this painful tooth can be removed once and for all. Unfortunately, it is near impossible to treat this type of abscess with injectable antibiotics alone, and infected teeth, like this one in Yuliya, really require extracting. Using injectable antibiotics alone would only act as a temporary Band-Aid and the infection is likely to reoccur. Estimate for the dental surgery is $5000 (it may be more) on top of the $1500 already spent on the initial assessment and X-rays.
The money will be spent on paying the bill for the vet, vet team and dental surgeon to remove the infected tooth. All donations gratefully received to help towards the cost.
Yuliya after her operation 30 November 2023
Although the dental surgery was unable to remove all the tooth, the rotten part
was removed and it is hoped that the rest of the tooth will fall out naturally after time. Yuliya's face has completely healed and there is no sign of the abscess that initiated the need for surgery. I will continue to monitor her but at the moment all is looking good. Thank you all for your support. Valerie
