Fiona - diagnosed with bowel cancer while pregnant, has to deliver her son at 32.5wks so she can heal in preparation for chemo and radiation
Canterbury
Fiona's dream of becoming a mum finally came true, but at 38 years of age, and 31wks pregnant, she was diagnosed with bowel cancer and spots on her lungs that need further investigation. She now has to deliver her son at 32 and a half weeks, and he will need to spend at least five weeks in hospital, due to being born prematurely. After his birth, Fiona will be focusing on bonding with her little guy and healing from her C-section. A PET scan will be done as soon as possible after delivery to see exactly what the spots on her lungs are and once she has healed enough from the operation she will start an intense round of chemotherapy and radiation treatment in order to shrink the bowel growth before an operation will be done to remove it. We are forever hopeful and positive that the lung spots will not be cancerous because if they are then treatment will stop after chemo and radiation. Fiona's Mum, Gene', will be helping her out with support by way of looking after the little guy, however she needs our help to cover costs of travel from Ashburton to Christchurch for her treatment, the time she is taking off work to begin this journey, and any other expenses that may crop up due to this crappy diagnosis!!
Fiona is my cousin - my Dad and her Mum are twins. She is family... I have to do something to help on this tough road ahead! #help4fiona
Update on Fiona's battle... 6 March 2017
So, it's been a while since we did an update on this page. Fiona enjoyed her Christmas and New Years with baby Morgan while feeling pretty good after her bowel removable operation.
Unfortunately the Doctors have decided that the spots on the lungs are inoperable, but Fiona's not ready to give up that easily! She's decided to smash it with aggressive chemo to prove them wrong! She's focusing on diet and supplements to support her body to fight, and is also going to look at options for getting treatment/surgery done elsewhere (if they won't do anything here).
Fiona continues to appreciate all the support, in whichever form that is, from everyone.
